Thelma Lee Jones (Terry) was born February 20, 1932 in Marks, Mississippi to the late Maggie Terry and Charlie Terry. She was the eighth child out of nine children. Thelma moved to Kansas City at a young age, and was raised by her late Aunt and Uncle, Priscilla and Douglas Hornberger. Thelma attended RT Coles Elementary and was a graduate from
Lincoln High School. Thelma accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. She also studied as a Jehovah Witness and Seventh Day Adventist. Thelma was united and baptized in the Church of Christ in
Kansas City, until she moved to Pleasant Hill, MO and became a member of the Church of Christ of Pleasant Hill. She loved reading her bible and was very scholarly in scriptures.
Thelma was united in marriage to the late Oscar M. Jones for 64 years. From this union six children were born. Thelma and Oscar owned and operated their family business, The Jones Family Launderette where she managed for several years; and later
Oscar’s Bar-B-Que, owned and managed three locations for over
30 years. Thelma had a green thumb and enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens. She was creative in planting flowers in her
grandkids old sneakers. She also gave to many charitable organizations throughout. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar M. Jones,
one son, Donnie L. Jones, her parents, Charlie and Maggie Terry,
Aunt and Uncle, Priscilla and Douglas Hornberger, three brothers,
Howard, Matthew and Roosevelt, four sisters, Lula Mae, Rutha Mae, Minnie, and Dorothy.
Thelma leaves to cherish her memory forever: Her three sons, Michael (Gloria), Floyd, Timothy (Cathy) and two daughters, Michelle and Thelma Renee (William), one brother, Elbert Terry (MN), cousin/play sister, Ora Lee, Sister-in-laws, Brenda and Jessie,
16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, September 16th at Watkins Heritage Chapel. Visitation 10:00 A.M. Interment Forest Hill & Calvary Cemetery.
