The Lord blessed the world on August 19, 1926 when He bestowed a daughter named Mary Alice Washington upon Elmer and Louise (Renick) Washington. She was the youngest of her siblings- Marjorie, Elmer, Marie and Samuel.
Mary grew up and completed her education in Warrensburg, MO. She was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Warrensburg, MO. On February 6, 1948 Leonard Rucker and Mary Washington united in marriage before God. They devoted themselves to each other creating a cord of 3 strands with God being at the center. As a cord of three strands is not easily broken (Ecclesiastes 4:12), they exemplified beauty, strength, and resilience as they built their lives together. Leonard Jr., Dennis, Gloria, Joseph, Arthur, Ronald and Roland were blessed with a reverent, God-fearing, dutiful mother.
She sacrificed for her children and instilled Christian values. Home was wherever she was, as her love and guidance kept the family grounded as they traveled to various stateside and overseas locations as a military family. After the family settled in Kansas City, MO, Mary attended the former Christ Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City, MO.
Mary was woman of remarkable faith. She had a gentle, peaceful demeanor but was a tenacious advocate for the well-being and protection of her family. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life- her faith and family. She united the family by always having an open door and the best daily and Sunday family dinners, perfectly seasoned with love.
She was a homemaker, who sought comfort by listening to the word of God through spiritual hymns and gospel music and relaxed by watching her favorite television shows.
The Lord called Mary’s beloved husband, Leonard, home on February 19, 2021. Although devastated by the loss, she understood it was God’s will and soldiered on to make sure family was cared for in the midst of everything. Throughout the physical pain and distress she suffered in her last days, she gave God praise and called upon the Lord to give her rest.
The Lord decided on November 22, 2021, that Leonard had sufficiently prepared the way for Mary to join him in heaven. In no more pain as her spirit peacefully ascended, the cord of three strands is reunited eternally to watch over loved ones left behind. She is rejoined in heaven with her son, Dennis, her siblings, parents, and others who proceeded her in death. It is the responsibility of Mary’s children- Leonard Jr., Gloria, Joseph, Arthur, Ronald and Roland along with numerous grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends to honor and cherish her memory until we see her again.
