Jessie Bentley passed away on April 2, 2021 at her daughter’s (Veronica Welch) home in Kansas City, Missouri. Jessie was born on December 3, 1933 to the late Maud Ruth Cook and Floyd Looney. Jessie was preceded in death by two of her children: Vic and Sheila Bentley, her son in law, Gregory Welch and her siblings Mae Nell Dunn and Floyd (Joe) Looney.
Jessie graduated from Lincoln High School, in 1951, in the Kansas City, Missouri school district. She loved to learn and participated in many extracurricular activities. However, she excelled at and relished her position as a majorette on the school’s dance team.
Jessie gave her life to Christ at an early age. She joined Hosanna Missionary Baptist church in 1988 under the leadership of Pastor David Lee. At Hosanna, she severed on the financial committee as the accountant.
Jessie was blessed with a large and loving family. She married the love of her life, James Bentley Jr., on October 16, 1953. To this union six children were born.
Jessie was employed as an accountant and office manager at her brother’s convenience stores, 39th Street Hardware (Joe Looneys), for many years. She was also employed with Able One Answering Service as a phone operator until her retirement. Jessie’s most important role and the one that she put above the rest was her position as caregiver and advocate for her first born son who became disabled later in life.
Jessie loved her family, family gatherings, she loved to cook and bake especially for holidays and special celebrations. She loved to learn, she enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas with family, bingo, casino gambling, western movies, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Jessie is survived by her children: Regina Bentley-Phillips, Jerry Bentley, James Bentley, and Veronica Welch, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 17, 2021, 11:00am at Watkins Heritage Chapel. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00am-11:00am at the chapel. Service conducted by Lawrence A. Jones & Sons Funeral Chapel. Condolences may be shared on our website. Due to COVID-19, social distancing and face coverings are required.
