Obituary

Mattie L. Cornelius, was born on September 2, 1926 to the union of Charley Peters and Ardella (Webb) Peters in Minden, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, six siblings, Richmond Peters, Dora McKelvy, Henry Peters, John Peters, Lucille Daniels and James Peters, one granddaughter, Yolanda James.


Mattie was educated in the Minden, Louisiana Public Schools. She later moved to Kansas City, Missouri where she made her home over seventy five years. She was a member of the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. Wallace S. Hartsfield, Sr. and currently under the leadership of Dr. Wallace S. Hartsfield II. She was a faithful member attending Sunday School and was a member of the Senior Women's Missionary Ministry.


Mattie was united in marriage on February 16, 1946 to Jewell Cornelius. They were the owners of Three Friends Restaurant for many years located on the corner of 25th & Prospect Avenue. They hosted many events at their famous Soul Food restaurant. She was known for her good cooking and pleasant spirit, they never let anybody be hungry if you need a meal they would take of care of you. Sometimes customers would just stop and have a seat at the round table with Mattie and Jewell. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and cousins who will be greatly missed.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Jewell Cornelious, of the home; daughter, Pearl James, Kansas City, KS; her siblings, Herman Peters, Kansas City, MO, Omeria Flournoy, Geneva Peters, Wayne Peters, Richael Peters, Charnie Peters and Charles Peters, all of Minden, LA, Rita Johnson, Tyler, TX; three grandchildren, Beverly Thomas (Aaron), Telicia Walton and Willie James, Jr.; thirteen great grandchildren, host of nephews, nieces other relatives and her many former customers at Three Friends Restaurant.
 

Funeral Service Friday, December 2, at 11:00am at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation 10:00am-11:00am at the church. Service conducted by Lawrence A. Jones & Sons Funeral Chapel. Condolences may be shared on our website.
