Alvester Manning, 67, passed away peacefully in his hometown of Kansas City, Kansas on Friday, October 8, 2021. Al was born to James and Maggie (Singleton) Manning, the youngest of their 7 children. He was predeceased by brothers Leon, Grady, and "Billy," and leaves remaining his loving brothers, John (Rose,) David (Katherine,) and his sister Naomi, who named her brother Alvester.
Al graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1972, and briefly attended the University of Kansas before joining the United States Army. He married Shelia Hanna in 1975, and raised 3 children with her: Alia, Alan, and Adam. He adored his children, his "bonus daughters," Resha and Brandy, and his grandchildren: Christian, Alijah, Emya, Nikko, and Destynee. He had many great, lifelong friends whom he regarded and treated like family, and a host of nieces and nephews who loved and admired their "Uncle Al."
Besides his time in the Service, both active duty and later in the reserves, Al was a hardworking man and had many jobs providing for his family. One of his favorite positions was as an HIV/AIDS outreach educator with the American Red Cross, and the position from which he retired was as a Substance Abuse/Addictions counselor at Benilde Hall. His contributions to his family, friends, and community will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing this great man.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 23, 11:00am at Salem Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kansas. Private Disposition. Service conducted by Lawrence A. Jones & Funeral Chapel. Condolences may be shared on our website.
