Mrs. Mary B. Washington was born August 19, 1936 to the union of Viola Butler and Jeff Jones of Hampton, Mississippi. She was the second of eight children. She departed this life on January 2, 2021. She grew up in Tupelo, Mississippi.
Mary moved to Kansas City, Missouri during her teenage years after her mother passed and was raised by her grandmother, Virginia Butler.
Mary worked in the Kansas City, Missouri School District at Manuel High School as a Registrar where she later retired. She also worked part time at Safeway/Price Chopper, The City Union Mission and as a Poll Worker for The Missouri Election Board.
Mary was a proud member of Humphrey Temple Church Of God In Christ since January 3, 1991 in good standing under the leadership of the late Elder Buford Butler and Pastor Gregory Smith. She served in several positions, such as Sunday School Secretary, General Church Secretary, Assistant to Treasurer and Drove the church bus for over fifteen years.
Mary enjoyed being with family, cooking, going to church, shopping, going out to eat, playing dominoes, charades and bid whist. But her passion was serving in church.
Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Viola Butler, siblings, Clifton Jones, Ira Jones, Alice Jones and Samuel Penro, son, Micheal Kirkwood.
Mary leaves to mourn four children, Adell Kirkwood, Jr., Carl Kirkwood, Sr., Angela Kirkwood, Janet Howell (Frederick); two children of her sister’s that she raised as her own, Victoria Hudson and James Batson; thirty-four grandchildren; seventy great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; siblings, Dorothy Wilson, Myrtle Penro and Isaiah Penro and a host of family, friends and those in between.
Funeral Services will be held at 10am on Friday, January 15th at Contagious Life Church 534 E 99th Street. KCMO 64131. Visit 9 am Interment Leavenworth National Cemetery 12:30pm.
