Mary was 99 years old when she departed this life on February 29, 2020. She went the way she wanted to, on her terms. Mae Mae, as she was affectionately known was born in Clow, AR on May 31, 1920. Her parents were Hayes Wesson and Lizzy Beard. She was the oldest of her 3 brothers and 2 sisters. She finished high school in 1938 and got a high school scholarship to attend AMN College in Pine Bluff. It was a city and nothing like the farm.
She came to KC in 1940. She met and married Clayton Carter. To this union was born one daughter, Yvonne. Clayton died 10 months after her birth. Mae Mae, married a second time when Yvonne was two. Mae Mae, was a “workaholic”, having grown up in the depression, she worked wherever she could: bomber plant, day worker, child care provider, elevator operator and well known caterer in Kansas City for over 40 years.
Mae Mae, has been a member of Ward Chapel AME Church for over 70 years. She was a tireless worker in the church. Mae Mae, visited nursing homes, carrying fresh fruit and a smile. She did it simply because she enjoyed doing the work of the Lord. She taught us all what public service is and what it should be. Her one regret, is that she didn’t finish college. Hence she made sure that those dear to her, who wanted to go to college or finish college, could.
Her parents: Hayes and Lizzy preceded her in death as well as her siblings: Lorraine Terry, Genoa Wesson and Hayes Edward Wesson.
Left to remember her: Odette Woods, Margaret Nunley, Daldurie Jenkins, Yvonne Carter (daughter) KC, (Nieces) Cynthia Terry-Edd, (Evester) MD, Stephanie Carter KC, Kordie Marsenburg, Valerie Jenkins, Odette Jenkins, Theresa Vincent, and Christopher Wesson, Margaret Nunlley, Tanya Nunlley.
