Melvin Chism, Sr. 93, of Kansas City, MO died on Saturday, June 13th 2020 in his home in Raytown, MO, surrounded by his beloved children and grandchildren. He was born on April 25th, 1927 in Paris, Texas to the union of Nolie Turner and Charles Chism. Mr. Chism graduated on May 14th, 1942 in Paris, Texas, he then enlisted in the military in 1945, where he served in World War II. June 4th 1948, he married his beloved wife, Mercedee Kincode (Chism) to their union 9 children were born.
He accepted Christ at a very early age where he and his wife attended Bethel Church of God in Christ under the tutelage Dad Jackson located on 4th & Stewart KCK 66101. He served as a chairman of the Trust Board, a deacon and a Sunday school teacher for 40 years and sang in the adult choir. At the age of 32 in 1959 he started his own independent trucking company Chism & Son’s Trucking, he was one of the first minority black owned companies in KCMO, in the 1960’s. He was a well respected man in his community.
During the day he worked as a truck driver and at night he worked as a rock crusher. His business strived for 50 yrs and is still striving until this day. Mr. Chism was a devoted husband and father, an extremely hard-working man and patriarch of his community. He will be remembered as a faithful steward for the Lord and man of many talents.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, two siblings and three children.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories, smile and work ethic, his children; Charlotte Free (Webster), Sharon Walsh, Stephen Chism (Kim), Stephanie Smith (Michael), Dennis Chism and Keith Chism (Demetria).
Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 27th at Mount Calvary COGIC 2422 Van Brunt Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64127. Visitation 10:00 A.M. Interment Mt. Moriah.
