Maceo V. Thompson, Sr. went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at 11:41pm; he was age 90. He was born in Poteau, Oklahoma on July 28, 1930. His parents were Charley C. Thompson and Hazel U. Maxwell. He is survived by his wife, Joy Laverne Thompson, his daughter, Cynthia LaVerne Thompson, and his son, Maceo Verne Thompson, Jr. His brother Cleophus Thompson preceded him in death. He also had three grandchildren, Candice Thompson Arzu, Ashley Caprice Norris, Joyletta Chavondra Thompson, three great grandchildren and nephews.
Maceo was a humble, honest and hard-working man who loved his wife, family and friends. He was happily married to Joy for 17 years and they would play Scrabble and dominoes daily. He also enjoyed playing golf, pool, bowling, and chess. He attended Sumner Senior High School and graduated in 1949. He was later drafted to the Army where he served time in Kentucky from January 1952 through January 1954 with an honorable discharge. He was proud to be a leader of the military police unit responsible for guarding the stockade for prisoners at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
In January 1955, he attended Moler Barber College where he became a licensed master barber in June 1956 as a part-time barber for 16 years. He also worked for Bendix Corporation (now Honeywell) for 34 years. He started as a Forklift Operator and was promoted to Junior Planner, Senior Planner, and then Engineering Coordinator to oversee government projects while supervising a five-team member.
This man of God was a saint at St. Stephen Baptist Church where he was baptized on June 2, 1957. He was a reliable, respectable, and responsible servant. He dedicated his life doing the will of God in many ways for his church home. Maceo was ordained as a Deacon on May 15, 1963. He was trained by Reverend John W. Williams to serve as a Sunday School Teacher in the Young Adult Dept, where he remained as an active teacher for 52 years. He also served as a Financial Secretary for 30 years, an Operator for the radio ministry for 35 years, and a Superintendent for 2 years. His favorite scripture was Matthew 5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.” His favorite hymnal is “I Am Thine O’ Lord.” He retired his services in April 2013.
The Covid 19 social distancing and face covering requirements will be in effect at the funeral services. The memorial service will be held at Central Christian Church, 3801 Linwood Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64127. Visitation will begin at 10:00am through 12:00pm, with services starting promptly at 12:00pm (viewing will cease at the start of the program).
