Obituary

Deacon Marvin Grier, a veteran of World War II, beloved husband, father and longtime member of Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, peacefully passed away April 18, 2023, at the age of 99.   Marvin was born in Madras, GA on September 6, 1923. He grew up in Newnan, GA before enlisting in the U.S. Armed Forces in 1941.

During WWII he participated in the Naples-Foggia (1943), Rome-Arno (1944), North Apennines and Po Valley (1945) campaigns and was awarded the EAMET and VIC Service medals.  After completing his first deployment, he re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1946 and U.S. Army and Army Reserves. During his time in the military, he worked as a short order cook, construction foreman, armory supply clerk, and clerk typist. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service after 40 years of service and retired with the rank of Master Sergeant (E-8).

During his civilian time back home Marvin began working for the U.S. Postal Service where he retired after 40 years of service. Later he worked at Lawrence A. Jones Funeral Home and Metropolitan Baptist Church.

Marvin was industrious and loved working on home improvement projects. He ran a part-time repair business for many years working on any and everything from typewriters to lawn mowers. He was an active member of the Wayne Miner American Legion Chapter 149, a league bowler, and he enjoyed fishing, music, holiday cookouts, and watching sports, especially the KC Royals and KC Chiefs. He was close to his family and enjoyed spending time with them.

As a Deacon at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist, he was an Usher, worked in the Finance Department and control room helping to set up the radio broadcast. He enjoyed his time there and the camaraderie with his fellow members and lifelong friends.

Marvin loved his family dearly. Some of his most important roles were being a devoted and loving husband to his wife Faye, whom he married October 12th, 1963, and a loving father to his daughter Ruby, and “Papol” to his grandchildren RaShondra (Baby Girl) and Rickey (Poohbear).

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents Ruby and Walter Grier, stepson Stephen Ward, sister Alice North, brother John Grier, brothers-in-law Printice Britt, Clester Ivory, James Bush, sister-in-law Zora Scott and nephew Carmen North.

Marvin leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 60 years, Faye Grier, his daughter Ruby Grier-Banks, grandchildren RaShondra and Rickey (Shaketta) Banks, great grandchildren Dameria, Rickey, Ryn & Raven, brother-in-law Dennis Jackson (Rose) as well as many nieces, nephews, and other family members.
