Obituary

Dexter Reynard Hemphill was born

July 18, 1960 in Kansas City, Missouri to Ruby and Monroe Hemphill who preceded him in death.

He has lived in Madrid Spain, California, and Atlanta Georgia but made his home in Kansas City, Missouri.

Dexter, The Professor, Doc, Dex Hemphill, My Brother or Uncle Dexter as he was known depending on your connection to him. He was an extraordinary family man who was extremely dependable, loyal, and fun loving. He loved and appreciated the mastery of all types of music especially jazz. He liked being fashionable and well groomed. He was a chess player who was always ready for a game and a beer. He loved dogs and had many from Nina, Bill, Jasper, Rocky, and more.

Dexter was very social and a collector of loved ones and friends. He made himself the glue to hold us all together, with his classic phrase "you know them!" Rest assured by the end of your conversation with Dexter you’d know who “they” were, and he made sure that you knew if “they” were family, friend, or foe. The crushing absence of his presence with his trademark pessimistic corrections, comedic social ridicule, and his know it all comments which are only rivaled by his tenacious loyalty, his infectious love, generous heart, his knowledge from a wide range of achievements, and experiences which he shared with everyone in long winded details...are already missed.

Dexter received his High School Diploma from Central High School in Kansas City, MO. He was in the Air Force earning the rank of E5 as an Air traffic controller. He also earned a Certificate in Electronic. He had Associate Degrees from Atlanta Metropolitan State College and from Penn-Valley Community College, located in Georgia and MO. He then attended The University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he would have soon obtained a bachelor’s degree.

Dexter has had a variety of jobs, everything from being a Sous Chef at the Muehlebach Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri, a bus driver for KC Metro, a Greyhound Driver, School Bus Driver, Security Guard and many more. Dexter has lived through and drawn from every bit of the educational knowledge and experiences to prove a point. He loved to teach and to be right. Dexter had his personal way of how he loved God and showed his love as a believer. Dexter had a thirst for knowledge and he highly valued education making himself a life long learner and a natural teacher. His loving nature, teaching and generosity has left a huge hole in the lives of his family and his unique extended family.

His life and memories are missed by his long loved, loving companion Eleece, his six step children, his brothers and sisters, his aunts and uncles, his cousins, his many nieces and nephews whom many were his surrogate children such as Barry, Harry, Israel, Karnesha, Adorable, Tramaine, Turran, Anyshya, Tramell, Aireon, Little David, and La’Quyn. His surrogate parent’s whom he took care of are his Aunt Rose, Aunt Wilma, and Uncle Joe.
