Charles E. Shumate, Sr. was born on June 24, 1937 in Kansas City, MO to the late Robert W. and Leona Shumate.  He died at his home on Friday, April 24, 2020. Charles was educated in Kansas City, MO public schools.  He attended Charles Sumner Elementary School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1955.  In 1961, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Rockhurst College. He continued his education with postgraduate studies at the University of Missouri – Kansas City, Georgetown University, and the Illinois Institute.

After graduating from college, Charles began working as a chemist for the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.  He later transferred to the U. S. Environmental and Protection Agency where he continued working as a chemist and compliance officer until his retirement in 1999.  Charles was a member of BIG, (Blacks in Government of Kansas City, Inc.) where he served on the executive committee as a Federal Government Liaison.  He also spent time with the American Chemical Society and other scientific organizations. Charles was a member of Paseo Baptist Church where he was baptized at an early age.

He later attended St. Stephen Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with family, reading, socializing and remained actively involved in his high school reunion committee. Charles supported several community service organizations, such as the Boy Scouts, neighborhood organizations, schools, and community facilities encouraging young people to continue pursuing their goals. He served on a committee which awards scholarships to high school students seeking a college education. He worked as reading tutor in a YMCA sponsored program and participated with a Spanish language and culture study group. He loved crossword puzzles, geography, nature, cars, and jazz. In 1963, Charles united in marriage to Jean V. Morris who preceded him in death.  To their union, two sons were born.

He was also preceded in death by both parents, brother, John Murphy and sister, Betty A. Denmon. Charles leaves to cherish his memory two devoted sons, Charles E. Shumate, Jr. and David A. Shumate (Andrea) both of Kansas City, MO, five grandchildren, Aubriana, Tori, Sydni, Brianna and Adrian, brother, Robert Shumate, Jr. (Claretha), Lee’s Summit, MO, sisters, Barbara Shumate, Kansas City, MO, Janice Thigpen (John), Kansas City, MO, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. 

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Lawrence A. Jones & Sons Linwood Chapel. Interment Newcomer’s Floral Hills Cemetery, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, MO.
