BENNIE R. BURKS
Bennie R. Burks Sr., 83, was born March 3, 1936 as an only child to the union of Bennie Burks and Ola Thompson Burks in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Bennie graduated from Alexander High School in Brookhaven, Mississippi and Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics. After graduation, he joined the Army for 3yrs as a Cryptologist and Sharpshooter with Top Secret Clearance. During this time, he met his “wife” Mary, they had been married 57 years. When Bennie and Mary married they had 7 children; Chriss Rucker (John) – KC, MO, Mark Burks (Donna) – Phoenix, AZ, Arthur Gammon (Eddie) – KC, MO, Bennie Burks Jr. – Dallas, TX, Clemente Burks (Marquetta) – KC, MO, Yolanda Brown (Kenneth) – San Diego, CA, April Burks (Charles) – Chandler, AZ; with 14 grandkids and 12 great grandkids. Chriss and Clemente preceded him in death. Bennie had been retired the last 22 years from the Post Office after 36 years of service as a Supervisor and General Foreman. Bennie was a quiet a man of not many words but when he did speak you knew he was smart, honest, kind and always had a plan. He was a season ticket holder for the Kansas City Chiefs “Super Bowl Champs” for 40 years. He was a lover of all sports, politics and the news, he watched CNN/CSPAN relentlessly. He loved spending time and holidays with his family in KC and traveling to Arizona. Also, he enjoyed playing cards “Dirty Hearts” with his best friend Carl and friends and hitting up the casinos with his wife Mary playing Poker and Blackjack in Vegas. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 14, 2020 at Morning Star Baptist Church 2411 East 27th Street KCMO. 64127 Visitation 10:00 a.m. Interment 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 17, 2020 in Leavenworth National Cemetery.
