Mrs. Shirley A. Harris-Britt

Shirley Ann Harris-Britt’s love, wisdom, and kindness has touched countless lives. Born on September 20, 1956, in Greenwood, Mississippi, to Mattie and Sammie Harris, Shirley was the eldest child and the only daughter, growing up alongside her two younger brothers, Alfred and David. Their childhood was filled with adventures that created bonds and memories that lasted a lifetime. As a teenager, Shirley moved to Kansas City, MO, where she graduated from Central High School, Class of 1975. She continued her education at the University of Northern Iowa, where she studied education and early childhood development, becoming an esteemed Omega Pearl. Shirley's life was a testament to the power of love and the importance of family. She was blessed with a daughter, Kristie, who everyone knew as the light of her life. Shirley's love for children extended beyond her own, as she nurtured her young nieces, nephews, and cousins with affection and care. She had a unique ability to see each child for who they were, infusing them with love, inspiration, and a sense of self-worth. Her professional journey began at the Childhood Development Center at Research Hospital, but Shirley was never one to remain stagnant. Always eager to learn and grow, she transitioned into roles as a monitor technician, registered respiratory therapist, and eventually found her calling in social work. With determination and a thirst for knowledge, she earned her bachelor’s degree in human services at the age of 63, demonstrating that personal evolution and growth are possible at any stage of life. Shirley’s life took a new and joyful turn when she married Michael Thorton Britt on May 21, 1992. Her family expanded, and with it, her heart grew even fuller. She welcomed three children and a host of new brothers and sisters into her life, bringing more laughter, love, and adventure into her world. Together with her husband, Shirley enjoyed Thanksgiving Blues Brunches, cruising the world, Christmas in Branson, and vacations in Los Angeles. She was the life of family parties, where she would dance and captivate everyone with her iconic big, joyous laugh— a sound that will be cherished in the hearts of all who knew her. Shirley is survived by her husband, Michael Britt; her devoted mother, Mattie Miller; her beloved brothers, Alfred Miles and David Miles; and her cherished children: Kristie Larry (David), Michael Terrell Britt (Joyce aka "Peaches"), Ricky Mahaney (Jerri), and Amanda Gordaoff. She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren as well as a host of brothers and sisters-in-love, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will forever hold her in their hearts. Shirley is preceded in death by her grandparents Frank and Georgia Savory, Father Sammie Harris and grandson Trey Mahaney. Memorial Services will be held on Friday, August 30, 2024, 11:00am at the Watkins Heritage Chapel. Services conducted by Lawrence A. Jones & Sons Funeral Chapel.
