Mrs. Savannah Godard

Obituary After more than eighty-nine years, on May 11, 2021, the Lord called our Queen, Mother Savannah Godard home to receive her crown. She was surrounded by her loved ones. She was born June 9, 1931 in Douglas, GA to Elijah (Lige) Sr. and Zannie Shaw. Savannah was the sixth of ten children and the last surviving sibling. She was preceded in death by her parents; Husband, John Henry Godard; Siblings, Otis Shaw (Allene), Alma Davis (David), Amon Shaw (Merdell), Lige Shaw Jr. (Ruth), Virginia Williamson (James), Robert Shaw, Frank Shaw (Lucretia), Lawrence Shaw, Henry Shaw; Daughter, Denise Godard-Green; and Daughter-in-Law, Rita Godard. Savannah graduated from Coffee County High School, Douglas, GA. and married the love of her life John Henry. Their union and enthusiasm to succeed in life brought them north to Kansas City, MO. (KCMO), in the summer of 1951. They lived happily in the Kansas City area the remainder of their lives together. During their 49 years of marriage, they had nine children, five boys and four girls. While in Kansas City Savannah had a successful career at Western Electric and Hillcrest Country Club where she developed many long-lasting friendships with coworkers. Savannah accepted Christ at an early age and actively served in ministries in every church she joined. After moving to Kansas City, she and the family attended Ward Chapel AME Church until joining Emmanuel Baptist Church in 1966. At Emmanuel she served faithfully as a member of the Women’s Auxiliary and as a Deaconess. Soon after the death of her husband in August 1999, Savannah became a devoted member of Second Missionary Baptist Church, Grandview, MO., and served faithfully until her passing. She was a member of the Mothers Board, affectionately known as the “Daughters of Destiny Diamonds.” In her later years, attending church service became the highlight of her week. She attended service and Sunday School faithfully. Savannah frequently provided transportation to Mothers Roby, Seals, and Black developing a close bond and friendship. Most of all, she loved the Lord, and she loved everyone equally. Savannah had a wonderful way of sharing and expressing God’s word and the love she had for Him. Her love for people was unlike anything you have ever experienced. She didn’t know a stranger and would make anyone feel welcomed just from her beautiful smile. Savannah enjoyed traveling with her social group, “The Christian Women Illuminizers” and with her family. Mention, “travel” and she would have her bags packed, days/weeks, ahead of time. She loved to dance, cook, and entertain. She never missed attending the plays written and produced by her beloved son Terry Joe. She truly enjoyed sports, especially the KC Royals/Chiefs and the LA Lakers!! However, her greatest love was for her children and grandchildren, who all considered her their Queen. Savannah leaves to cherish her memory her sons Johnny Godard, Orlando, FL; Tommy Godard, KCMO; Kenneth Godard, Richmond, IN; Kevin Godard (Velva) Atlanta, GA.; and Terry Godard, KCMO. Daughters Nancy Guthrie (William), Alexandria, VA.; Victoria Renfrow (Clinton), KCMO; Angela Godard-Davis, KCMO. Sister-in-laws Willa Shaw, Billie Shaw, and Estella Shaw all of KCMO. Grandson, Marc Godard, Chicago, IL. who was raised like the 10th, sibling, 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. Special friends Ms. Lillie M. Burney, and Ms. Rose Gayden; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and other loving relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 22, 2021, 11:00am Second Missionary Baptist Church. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9am-11am at the church. Service conducted by Lawrence A. Jones & Sons Funeral Chapel. Condolences may be shared on our website.
