Mr. Nathaniel Green

Nathaniel was born January 2nd, 1931, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma to Thomas William and Roxy Green. He was their second of four children. His parents, sister Clara, and two brothers, Rufus and Eddie B, all preceded him in death. Nathaniel was educated in the Okmulgee, Oklahoma school system and later relocated to Kansas City with his Aunt Novella Willis. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1953-1955. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Kansas City. He joined Spruce St. Matthew Baptist Church where he served in various organizations; he eventually accepted God’s instructions to lead, so he became a member of the Deacon board and served as their chairman until his health began to decline. Nathaniel knew the Lord and openly professed his faith and knowledge of God’s power and grace. The church is also where he was reunited with the love of his life, JoAnne Cathy. “Jo,” as he affectionately called her, was his match made in heaven. They were together for over 40 years until JoAnne’s passing in 2017. Nathaniel loved people and had a special gift of communication that allowed him to excel in a career in retail. He worked for several companies, and received many accolades for his salesmanship; this led to great success in every store he managed. Upon retiring from that professional journey, he decided (actually Jo decided) he needed to find something to do, so he worked at SE3 engineering and Desmond Rental. His unwavering work ethic was the key to his many professional achievements. He was the Past Master in the Fred Dabney #24 Masonic Lodge; this is an honor he cherished. A recent visit by his lodge brought him so much joy and love; it was important for him to know the traditions and brotherhood would be passed down to the younger members. Nathaniel loved his family fiercely, and spending time with them was one of his greatest pastimes- especially during the holidays. He loved watching CNN, the Royals, and Chiefs. Nate had a million dollar smile that would light up any space he entered- that smile just added to his good looks, height, and natural charm. In his prime, Nathaniel was incredibly stylish. He loved nice clothes and good cologne. With all of his gifts, he always remained humble and down to Earth. If someone complimented him, he returned one back with a hug in and a smile. He had a way of making anyone he encountered feel they were important to him and to the world. Nathaniel leaves to cherish his memory: two daughters, Naomi “Ginger” Stewart- Lyons (Michael) of Kansas City MO; Lisa Smith of Olathe KS; Son, Chuck Mays of Las Vegas NV, Daughter in Law, Carol Barker of Kansas City MO; Goddaughter, Alisha Madison Gripp (Jeff) of Olathe KS; Special Sisters Doris May of St. Joseph MO; and Opzerine Madison of Overland Park KS, and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. His master replied, Well done, thou good and faithful servant! Matthew 25:21 Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2024, 12:00pm at Spruce St. Matthew Baptist Church. Interment Leavenworth Nat'l Cemetery, LVNKS. Masonic Lodge Service- 11:00 AM, Visitation will be from 11am at the church. Service conducted by Lawrence A.
