LEROY BLANTON

Obituary Leroy Blanton was born in Natchez, Mississippi on November 16, 1933 to the late Robert Blanton Sr., and Charlotte Scott. His parents and siblings: Willie Brown, Robert Blanton Jr., Alice Stanton, and James Blanton all preceded him in death. His formal education was in the state of Mississippi. He attended Brumfield High School where he was a star basketball player. Scouts would come from all around to watch him play because of his outstanding skills and talents. His talent afforded him the opportunity to transfer to St. Francis private school, a predominantly Caucasian school. He was their star basketball player who set school records. Leroy graduated in 1951. He relocated to Kansas City, Missouri in 1956 where he united with the Morning Star Baptist Church, there he was baptized and sang in the Male Chorus. Leroy later moved his membership to Sunrise Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Arthur Drummond and he served as a member of the Male Chorus and served on the Finance Committee. In January 1986, Leroy and his family joined the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor L. Henderson Bell, where he participated in the Adult Sunday School class and the Male Chorus. Leroy was a hard worker, amazing provider and he believed in taking care of his family. He was employed at Thompson Hayward Chemical plant for over 30 years. After retirement, never one to sit still, he worked at Mike’s Mini Mart for a number of years. On September 27, 1998, he married the love of his life, Carol White and gained two amazing daughters. They enjoyed fishing, eating out at different restaurants and enjoyed worshipping together at Mt. Pleasant. They also enjoyed spending time with their family and loving on their grandkids. Affectionately known as “Uncle Mane” and “Uncle Leroy” to some and “Lee” and “Fats” to others, he played such a large role in his family and community. An amazing man of valor, very humble, a protector of people and a father figure to so many, our gentle giant was always helping others. From mentoring the youth to helping them hone their craft of basketball, he was a well known basketball coach at the YMCA. He loved young people and was an encourager to all. Leroy had an amazing sense of humor. He had an infectious laugh that would light up a room. He would love on you, then beat you in a game of pool, spades, or “bones”. He was a lover of sports and you would always catch him watching the LA Lakers, KC Royals, and the KC Chiefs.
