Obituary MS. JOY SPENCER To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. A time to be born; and a time to die. Ecclesiastes 3:1. Joy’s birth is saddened by her transition to heaven on January 9, 2021. Joy Lynn Spencer was born March 5, 1970 in Kansas City, Kansas to Jari Johnson and Dilcie Spencer. However, she was raised and loved by Charles Slaughter, her step-father. Named “Joy” she brought much joy and happiness to family and friends she came in daily contact with. Joy received her formal education from the Kansas City, Kansas, USD 500 District. She graduated from Wyandotte High School, Class of 1988. Furthering her lifetime ambition, Joy also graduated from Brown Mackie College, majoring in Nursing. Her first employment and training was with Dr. John Gamble. Keeping a passion for her profession of serving others, she later accepted employment at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas (Family Medical Group.) Her parents nurtured her to acknowledge Christ in her life. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Joy confessed a hope in Christ at the Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Marvin Cockrell at an early age. In later years, she united with the Guiding Star Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. David Lee. She was a faithful and a dedicated member. An active Christian of Guiding Star, she participated in the Mass Choir, Praise Team, Praise Dancers and a committed and honest member of the Trustee Board. Joy enjoyed in her leisure time and it became her hobby shopping for small purses. She could be found any Saturday with her mom, sister and her mother’s childhood friend, Renee Thornton, fondly called by Joy as “Nae-Nae,” spending all day looking for unique and different small purses. Another hobby was she enjoyed watching Action Movies and Comedies. Suspense and laughter amused her. This brought pure entertainment to her. Joy had one sister, Antrina Denise Spencer that proceeded her in death. Remembering and cherishing all memories Joy left are her mother, Delice Spencer, her stepfather, Charles Slaughter both of Kansas City, Kansas; her father, Jari Johnson of Kansas City, Kansas; sister, Jarcia (Stanley) Culler of Kansas City, Mo.; uncles, Richard Spencer, Lee Spencer, and Robert Spencer; one aunt, Mayola Racy, two nephews that she loved dearly and helped nurtured, Andrew Jackson, Sr. and Quincy Spencer; a beloved nephew, Stanton Culler, and two nieces, Sydneigh and Culler. cousins, extended family, and friends. Funeral Services will be held at 12pm on Saturday, January 30th at Guiding Star MBC 3035 North 27th St KCK 66104. Visitation 10am. Private Disposition.
