Janice Ralphan Patterson-Brown

Obituary Janice Ralphan Patterson-Brown was born to Ralph Bentley and Mary Elizabeth Patterson-Brown on December 19, 1950 in Kansas City, MO. She was adopted by Ernest Brown who participated significantly in her upbringing. Janice accepted the Lord as her Personal Savior and was baptized at Good Samaritan Baptist Church under the pastorship of Rev. Weatherspoon. Janice graduated from Paseo High School where she was a proud member of the Cheerleading Squad. She also studied journalism at Paseo and worked on the school yearbook staff. Her deep interest in reading and history took her to Lincoln University of Missouri in Jefferson City where she obtained a BA and Lifetime Certification in Education (K-9). Following college, she worked as Executive Secretary to the Director of Martin Luther King Hospital. Following the eventual closure of MLK, she held professional positions in Labor Relations at Interstate Bakeries and Program Management at Honeywell FM&T where she met her husband of 42 years. She later obtained a MA in Teaching & Curriculum from Baker University in Baldwin, KS and retired from Belton School District #124 in 2010 after 19 years of successful teaching. She was a proud member of the National Education Association (NEA). Her 2 children and 2 grandchildren were the love and pride of her life. She took an 8-year leave from her last corporate position to spend time with her young son and newborn daughter. They would collect loose change from around the house, take it to a coin exchange machine, and see what quality of lunch could be bought from local stores or restaurants in Belton. The entire family would take long vacations to Branson where fishing, swimming, bumper-car riding, museum, nature and factory visits, and theme parks provided some of the best-ever times and laughter. Both of her children went on to obtain Bachelor’s degrees in Communications {Television & Video Production and Public Relations} from the University of Missouri-Columbia and Missouri Western State University respectively. A huge part of her returning to graduate school was to show her children that academic success was possible even 30-plus years past completion of undergraduate education. She enjoyed vacation travel especially to California and, of course, traveled each and every summer to visit her daughter in Denver. Janice was preceded in death by her adopted father, Ernest Brown; her father, Ralph Bentley; her mother, Mary E. Brown; her uncles Bobby and Weber Patterson; and her youngest brother, Glennon L. Brown. Janice leaves to cherish her in memory her son, Roy J. Brown, Jr. (Angela) of Raymore, MO; her daughter, Amber E. Brown of Denver, CO; her husband Roy J. Brown, Sr. of the home; her brother, Ernest D. Brown, Jr. of Kansas City; her sister, Barbara Bentley-Davis of Kansas City; her granddaughters, Tiffany Lynn and Olivia Reece Brown of Raymore, MO; her niece, Deneen Brown of Kansas City; first-cousin, Keaver Brenai of Beverly Hills, CA; her sisters-in-law, Lonniejean Sublet-Brown of Kansas City and Rita T. Brown-Williams (Morey) of Liberty, MS; and her brothers-in-law, Stafford Brown, Jr. (Edith) of Taft, TN and Norman W. Brown (Georgia) of Ventress, LA and a host of other cousins, nieces, nephews, co-workers, and friends. Memorial Services will be held at 11am on Saturday, January 9th at Lawrence A.
