Mrs. Flora E. Collins

Mrs. Flora Etta Collins, a beloved matriarch and devoted Christian, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, in Independence, Missouri, at the age of 94. Born Floretta Octavia Adkins on March 9, 1932, in Bixby, Oklahoma, she lived a life filled with love, faith, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Flora was a proud member of the first graduating class of Wheatley High School in Boynton, Oklahoma, in 1950. Shortly after graduation, she married Calvin Morey, and to this union three beautiful daughters were born. Following their divorce, Flora relocated to Wichita, Kansas, with her youngest sister, Erma Malone. There, they both worked at Boeing Aircraft, building a new chapter in their lives. While in Wichita, Flora met and married the love of her life, Commodore A. Collins “C.A.” Together, they built a beautiful blended family of nine children and shared an extraordinary bond for 66 years. Flora’s life centered around her family. She was a nurturing and devoted mother to her surviving children: Carolyn Jones of Kansas City, Missouri; Leanette Hutchinson of Boynton, Oklahoma; Patricia Anderson (Patrick) of Houston, Texas; Angelia Collins-Harrison of Kansas City, Missouri; Gwendolyn Hawthorne (Todd) of Kansas City, Missouri; and Alfred Collins Sr. (Early) of Boynton, Oklahoma. She was a cherished sister to Aseline Colbert of Pearland, Texas; a loving sister-in-law to Clella Truevenia Banks of Wichita, Kansas; and Curtis Collins (Willa) of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her legacy lives on through her 20 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, 19 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Price Adkins and Connie Morey; her siblings, Una Mae Thompson, Gustava Johnson, Erma Malone, and Hubert Adkins Sr.; her daughters, Claretha Joseph, Betty Griffin, and Cecilia Collins; her grandson, Marcus Penny; her great-granddaughters, Kaylen Joseph and Maurtica Britt; and most recently, her beloved husband, Commodore Collins. Flora’s devotion to her faith was unwavering. Before her health declined, she served faithfully in many roles throughout her church life, including at Stranger’s Rest Baptist Church in Wichita, Rising Star Baptist Church in Omaha, Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City, and Fellowship Right Baptist Church, where she worshipped under Pastor Lawrence W. Nevels Sr. Her service included the usher board, hospitality committee, deacons’ and trustees’ wives ministry, and the Mother Board. Known for her exceptional cooking and her infectious laughter, Flora had a gift for bringing people together. Her fried chicken was legendary, and Sundays were filled with family, fellowship, and her delicious cakes and pies. She also had a deep love for caring for children, often opening her home to nieces, nephews, and others in need of care. Her grandchildren fondly remember the joy and togetherness experienced at Grandma and Grandpa’s home. Flora’s life was a testament to love—love for God, love for family, and love for community. Her home was always a place of comfort, warmth, and generosity. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit and legacy will live on in all who were blessed to know her. May her memory bring comfort and peace to all who mourn, as we celebrate a life so beautifully lived. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026, 11:00am at the Watkins Heritage Chapel.
