Mr. Ferris "Sonny" Potts, Sr.

Ferris Potts, passed away on May 16, 2025. Ferris A. Potts Sr. we called him Sonny Potts . He was the baby boy of 12 children. His late father Ernest Robert Potts Sr. and late mother Edna Mae Potts had him on Nov. 12, 1933 in Owasso, Oklahoma. Sonny was 1 years old when his father died and his mother took the 10 children that survived and moved them to Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Sonny Potts played basketball while attending Booker T. Washington school. His two running partners were Cismore and Finley. According to the legacy they out played ALL the surrounding towns basketball teams. He was known to his nephews as laughing “Uncle Sonny.” He would tell so many stories that we would be hanging off our chairs with laughter. He worked at Lake City Ammunition for 31 years and retired. Now we are….retirees This same time last year my brother Ferris Jr., dad and myself was in Las Vegas burying his last living sister Aunt Bean, now it’s his turn to leave us. Sonny Potts met the love of his life (Betty Ruth) at her cousin the late Cecil Brown’s house. They married July 11, 1953, and celebrated 69 years of marriage at the time of her death. He joined Pastor Mark Tolbert’s Victorious Life church about 10 years ago, because it was right around the corner so he could get back home to watch the games. My father could squeeze a dime twenty different ways. He always taught us to work and pay all your bills, but make SURE You save some money. No matter how hard times were he always bought mom new furniture and he bought a new car every year. Some of his buddies would come to the house and would say “Sonny you don’t have 10 kids this house is to clean?” We kept a clean house and he kept a clean car. “Per Teresa (the baby girl) dad took care of 9 kids and 9 kids took care of him.” Ferris (Sonny) Potts was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son Felix Potts; and siblings. He leaves to cherish his memory his children: Ferris A. Potts Jr.; Anita Y. (Nonnie) Potts; Edna Alexander (David); Frances Cunningham (Raymond); Ferris A. Potts Jr.; Peggy Rowell (Anthony); Randy Potts (Debbie); Larry Lee Potts (Tomeco); Teresa Hill (Greg); Vernon Potts (Linda); a host of grandkids; great grands; etc. He really loved all his kinfolk and some friends which he out lived. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday May 31, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Christian Tabernacle COGIC Church 7405 Paseo, Kansas City, Missouri 64131. Interment: Forest Hill Cemetery.
