Elaine Theresa Ward

Obituary Elaine Theresa Ward entered this world on October 23, 1938 to the parents of William Edward Ward and Bertie Simmons Ward. She attended Charles Summer Grade school, R. T. Coles, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1956. Elaine was a lifelong learner of academic and the school of life. She received her AA in business and then received her Bachelor of Arts in education in order to teach elementary school (her first love). In 2005, she received her Master of Arts in education and soon after her Lifelong Certificate in Adult Basic/Elementary Education. Elaine accepted Christ at an early age at St Matthew later joining Jamison Memorial Temple. She worked in all areas of the Church but loved working with young people and seniors. Uniting with Mason United Methodist Church, she used her talents as chair of the Church council, secretary of the Staff parish Relation Committee, President of the United Methodist Women, Adult Youth Leader (where she welcomed international students to stay with her during the time in summer service), member Wednesday bible study group to name a few of her services to the Church. Elaine loved learning from and teaching children to young adults as well as senior adults. As an elementary teacher in the Kansas City Public Schools, she in sighted a love of learning in her students. The students and parents would write many letters expressing their appreciation and love for her dedication. Her commitment to excellence in education lead her to become a member/secretary in the American Federation of Teachers (691). This commitment landed her in jail during the teachers’ strike in 1974. With her business degree, she obtained employment with the Bendix corporation serving as secretary to a department of engineers. She received many awards and recognitions from the staff. She later returned to teaching with the Kansas City Missouri Public School receiving an "Outstanding Teacher" award in Adult Basic Education. She loved to learn and give back as evidenced by her travels all over the US with her Lincoln High School Alumni, church, and anywhere where she could return to better serve her community and church. She mentored children in golf and bowling using her membership in the HEART OF AMERICA GOLF CLUB and the Bowling Guild of Kansas City, to introduce children and adults alike to both sports. Elaine’s heart and commitment were first to God and then to the improvement and development of the community. As an active member, she served as treasurer to Kensington Community and participated in Chelesa Elementary school voluntary program which provided new clothing for students and gifts throughout the year and holidays. She also served as a Member on the Unified Government Advisory Committee on Disabilities issues. These are just a few of her commitments. Every skill She mastered she taught to whomever came into her life. She loved people and lived to share her talents with all. Elaine loved life and it showed in all the areas she participated in especially GEE GEE Line Dancing where she was an active member for over nine years before her health prevented her from attending classes and the many events. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, April 22, 2019 at Mason Memorial United Methodist Church 3333 Wood Avenue KCK 66104. Visitation 10:00 A.M.
