Mr. Clarence A. "Chuck" Moore

Chuck Moore was born in Topeka, Kansas in 1934, where he attended Buchanan and Boswell Jr. high schools. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1952. In his senior year, he was selected as one of the first two African Americans to play baseball on the newly desegregated Topeka high school sports team. Chuck earned his BS degree (Cum Laude) from Park College {University) in Communication Management Arts in 1993. At the age of 19, Chuck moved to Kansas City and was hired by KPRS radio station as a part of their announcing and disc jockey staff in 1953. He was drafted into the Armed Services in 1957 and was assigned to train at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Following basic training he was ordered to serve out his two-year active duty stint at Fort Sam Houston Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. While there, he was assigned as a deejay on the Brooke Army Hospital closed circuit radio station to entertain GI Patients. Chuck received an honorable discharge in 1959. Chuck returned to his on air duties at KPRS following his discharge from the Army he joined the all black National Guard unit at 18th and Highland. Later in his media career in 1962, he hosted the extremely popular “Request Show” that was rated as the most listened to radio program in the 3pm weekday time slot for teens in Kansas City. In 1963 he was promoted to Program Director and was featured in an article by Billboard, a National publication of top rated hit songs and recording artists. Chuck Moore left KPRS in 1966 to become the first African American on-air personality in Kansas City to serve as an Announcer on a Kansas City general market Radio and TV Station at KCMO Radio and TV. (now KCTV) In 1968 he was assigned to produce his own TV program titled (‘30 Minutes’ later known as ‘Minority Matters’, later still ‘Urban Affairs.’ His Public Affairs program featured local musical talent initially and more broadly, interviews with public officials and Kansas City community activists. His program aired for 29 years and was the longest running public affairs program on Kansas City television. Chuck left as Sales Executive at KCMO to become a Sales Executive at WHB in 1975, while continuing to produce his television program at KCMO TV5. Later he produced a public affairs TV show at KSHB TV. In 1979 he was offered a position as Assistant Manager at KPRS. In 1984 he was offered a General Manager position at a new radio station he named as KCXL-AM that featured an Adult Contemporary format targeted to minority communities. Chuck Moore was not only an on-air Radio and Television personality throughout the 1970’s and 80’s, he was sought out as a commercial spokesman for various companies. He served as a talent for Standard Home Improvement Company, Yellow Freight, Sprint, and Payless shoes. He has appeared in many training films for major companies including the Menninger Psychiatry clinic. He was well known for his clear and distinctive voice and was requested to serve as host and master of ceremonies of many community events including the NAACP annual dinner, and local Sororities. Chuck was also noted as one of Kansas City’s most influential ‘Citizens’ award sponsored by The Kansas City ‘GLOBE’ newspaper Chuck also gave freely of his time and service as a board member of the Niles home for children, the Black Economic Union and as a founding member of (UMMA) United Minority Media Association, He was appointed as a member of the Mayors’ Environmental Commission in 2013. He was hired as an adjunct instructor for Communication studies at Park College, (University), Avila College (University) and the former Tarkio College. Chuck was selected by the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department in 1994 as the Marketing Manager and Media Spokesman. One year later, Mr. Ollie Gates, President of the Parks and Recreation Commission appointed him as Board Secretary. As such he achieved another first for African Americans, by becoming the first minority to serve as the 13th Secretary in commission history. In addition to his duties, Mr. Moore was asked to host the City Government show ‘Ask Your Councilman’ televised on the city’s cable channel from 1996 until retirement in 2009. Chuck Moore leaves to mourn his daughter Crystal A. Moore, ex-son in law Michael Stambaugh, Stepson Gary L. Bell, granddaughter Emmie N. Simms, grandson Miles C. Stambaugh, sister Alice J. Brunson of Kansas City, Kansas, and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial services Saturday, July 18, 10:30am at New Vision Christian Church.Private Disposition.
