Mr. Buford L. Scott

Buford Lee Scott III, 67, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026, at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. Born on February 19, 1958, Buford was the third child of Buford and Beatrice Scott. From an early age, he demonstrated a bright spirit and a deep sense of purpose as he lived in Kansas City, MO. His family was a member of Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he accepted Christ. In his adult years, he continued his walk of faith as a devoted member of Boone Tabernacle Church of God in Christ. Buford attended Ladd Elementary School, and at just eight years old, he was honored as Boy of the Year by the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Kansas City—an early reflection of the leadership, kindness, and dedication that would define his life. He later graduated proudly from Central High School, Class of 1976. He continued his education at Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University) in Kirksville, MO, where he excelled both academically and athletically. Buford was a member of the football and swimming teams and earned a degree in Physical Education. During his time there, he also became a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, forming lifelong bonds and embracing a commitment to service. After college, Buford held several positions before beginning what would become a remarkable 36-year career with Big Sky Distributors. Even while working full-time, his passion for sports never faded. He spent many years working part-time at the Gladstone Park and Recreation, where he poured his heart into coaching and mentoring young athletes. Coaching was not just something he did - it was who he was. He coached basketball, tee-ball, volleyball, and more, touching countless lives through his patience, encouragement, and unwavering belief in young people. His dedication to youth sports and the Gladstone Parks and Recreation was recognized in a special way when he was featured on the cover of the Gladstone Community Magazine, captured in an action photo doing what he loved most—coaching children. Buford was a proud Kansas City Chiefs fan, a loyal supporter of both MU and KU athletics, and a man who found joy in life’s simple moments—family gatherings, cheering on his teams, and spending time at the gym. His presence was steady, his laughter warm, and his heart endlessly generous. Known affectionately as Juney, Brew Daddy, and Big Daddy, the titles he cherished most were Dad and Papa. He will be remembered for his faith, his love for his family, his commitment to his community, and the countless young lives he shaped through sports and mentorship. His legacy lives on in every person he encouraged, every child he coached, and every life he touched. Buford was also an active member of the Boone Tabernacle Men’s Choir and served as an unofficial but faithful member of the Men on the Door Ministry until his health began to decline. Central High School was not only where Buford received his education - it was where he met the love of his life, Cynthia. They married on November 20, 1982, and together built a beautiful life grounded in love, faith, and family. Their union was blessed to rear three children: Maria, Charee, and Bradford, who were the pride of his life. Buford was preceded in death by his parents, Buford and Beatrice Scott; his brother, Larry Scott; and his sister, Caroline Pryor. Buford leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Cynthia; his children, Maria (Larry) Coleman, Charee Scott, and Bradford Scott; his sister, Barbara Scott; brothers-in-law Ernest Sewell and Owen Cole; sister-in-law Joyce Jones; lifelong friends Herlin Harrington, Fred Esery, Chester Brock, Jeff Taylor, Dan Furtrell and Rodney Parks; four beloved grandchildren—Cierra Davis, Cydnee Bane, Joe Bane, and Lauryn Coleman; three God Children Dan Futrell Jr., Hakim Houston and Iman Brown and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. Funeral Services was held on Thursday February 26, 2026, 11:00 a.m. at Boone Tabernacle COGIC. Interment: Twelve Gates Memorial Gardens. Visitation: 10 – 11:00 a.m. at the Church.
