Benjamin Tyler

Obituary Benjamin Eugene Tyler was born to the parents of Benjamin Brooks and Gwendolyn Tyler on September 5, 1953 in Kansas City, Missouri. Benjamin was the 2nd of 9 children. He was reared in the Kansas City Public School System and went to Booker T. Washington and DA Holmes Elementary Schools and Graduated from Lincoln High School in 1971. Benjamin, known by family and friends as Bennie went to the Military February 1973 and served a tour of duty in Vietnam with the U.S. Navy. After returning home from the military, Bennie signed up to take courses at Penn Valley Community College to pursue an Associate Degree. In 1982 Bennie met the love of his life when he met Sharon Helms through a family member. In 1988, they married, and Bennie instantly became a father to Sharon’s son’s DeAndre and Marc. While the family lived in Topeka, Kansas in the year 2000, Bennie accepted Christ at Antioch Baptist Church, Pastored by Delmar White. Bennie worked as a Park Ranger at Swope Park for a season prior to working with the Postal Service for 25 years as a group leader before his retirement. Bennie enjoyed an array of activities with his family such as: going to movies, concerts, traveling. Bennie especially enjoyed going to his son’s sports games and activities. One of his long-time friends was Howard Hughes and they shared a lot of great times together just like brothers. Earl Gardner became a brother to Bennie in 2008 and began to help care for him until the close of his life. He was preceded in death by his mother Gwendolyn Tyler, his stepson D’Andre Edwards, and his brother-in-law Gary Helms. He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife Sharon Helms 32 years of Kansas City, Mo and his stepson Marc Edwards/Jennifer of Blue Springs, MO. His father Benjamin Brooks and son Jason Tyler. Four Brothers: Robert Tyler, Geoffrey Tyler (Tracey), Gregory Williams (Barbara), Sean Tyler (Konya), and Four sisters: Brenda Tyler, Yvette Carter (Warren), Kathryn Fuller and Stephanie Carter all of Kansas City, MO. He leaves to mourn Two brothers-in-law Bryan Helms (Bettie)of Atlanta, GA and Raymond Harris, one sister-in-law Rachel Helms both of Kansas City, MO. He leaves to mourn his grandchildren: Dominick, DeAnte, Kylie, Tre, Alijah, Quincy and Nova and a host of nieces/great nieces and nephews/great nephews.
