Obituary A Time To Be Born ~ Barbara was born on August 6, 1940, in Holly Grove, Arkansas, to the union of Leroy and Willie Mae Childress. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lee A. Childress and Malvin Childress; and one sister, Jacqueline Tate. A Time To Plant ~ Barbara was educated in the public school system of Marvell, Arkansas. She also attended and graduated from Southwestern Christian College in Tyrell, Texas. She received Christ at an early age and united with the Church of Christ. Barbara and her oldest child moved to Kansas City in 1965, where she met and married Jewell Johnson. To this union, three daughters were born. She united with Mariah Walker A.M.E. Church. She served there as a Sunday School teacher, usher and a member of the choir. Later, Barbara reunited with Swope Parkway Church of Christ and taught Sunday School for preschoolers. In October 2013, she united with the Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Donald W. Givens. Long before Barbara united with Mount Vernon, she would often assist the kitchen committee with whatever help they needed. She also traveled with the church on out-of-town trips. Barbara was self-employed. She operated a daycare from 1972-2009 until her health began to fail. She helped raise a countless number of children throughout the Kansas City area. Many of the children simply called her “Granny” and some would even cry when their parents came to pick them up. Although Barbara was sick for many years, she did not complain ~ never once. A Time To Die ~ Barbara, at 80 years old, received her wings on Sunday, December 6, 2020, and is now resting in her Savior’s arms. A Time To Mourn ~ Barbara leaves to cherish her memories her husband of 56 years Jewell Johnson; one son, Jefra (Yolanda) English, Morena Valley, California; three daughters, Gwendolyn L. Johnson, Kansas City, Missouri; Dedra L. Johnson, Clearwater, Florida; Trina L. Johnson, Kansas City, Missouri; one granddaughter, Porsche’ L. Johnson, Clearwater, Florida; one adopted granddaughter, Kayla D. King, Kansas City, Missouri; one brother, Franklin (Hazel) Childress, Kansas City, Missouri; five sisters, Joyce (Juan) Ortega, Norwalk, California; Pearline Braboy, Kansas City, Missouri; Ruth (Alvin) Davis, Matteson, Illinois; JoAnn (Carl) Martin, Peoria, Illinois; & Loretta Childress; Kansas City, Missouri; one special daughter, Edna Williams, Raytown, Missouri; two special friends, Bertha Morris & Peggy Williams, both of Kansas City, Missouri; three grand-fur babies, Chloe, Sherlock & London; a host of nieces & nephews; & other relatives & friends. Funeral Services will be held at 12pm on Friday, December 18th at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church 3935 Prospect Ave. KCMO 64130. Visitation 10am. Interment Forest Hill & Calvary Cemetery.
