Wilma L. Thompson was born on September 4, 1943 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was the third oldest of six children (Alice Smalls, Thelma Lee, Catherine Bradford, Audrey Bell and Therma Wright) born from the union of Wilbert Lee and Bertha Mae Williams. After the death of their mother and father, the sisters were split between foster homes and adopted families, but their bond was never broken, and their relationship remained thicker than ever.
Wilma attended the Kansas City Public School District throughout elementary, middle and high school. She later graduated with her high school diploma from Lincoln College Preparatory Academy High School. After graduation, Wilma was accepted into a nursing school program, but her plans shortly changed when she met the love of her life, Roland S. Thompson, Jr. in 1960.
They began a courtship and was later united in Holy Matrimony in September 15, 1962. To their union, one son was born, Roland S. Thompson, III. Wilma and Roland lived a life full of love and happiness. They enjoyed traveling to various locations and many popular cruises. Some of their favorite places were Hawaii, Alaska and the Caribbean’s to name a few. Wilma enjoyed cooking, shopping, spending time with family and friends, and even briefly served as a member of the Red Hat Ladies of Kansas City, Missouri.
Wilma was employed through the Internal Revenue Services and served for 20 years until early retirement. She had a warm and kind-hearted soul. She never made an enemy and was always able to make a friend. She was always willing to help her friends and family members out no matter how big or small the task or request. She was always willing to give her last whether it was needed or not.
In November of 1982, Wilma became a grandmother to her first granddaughter, Tiffanie Forte, and later to her youngest granddaughter, Jasmine Thompson in the summer of July 1988. In the winter of 2016, she became a great-grandmother to her first great-grandchild, Austin Brown. Wilma was a loving sister, wife, mother, and grandmother and devoted all her time to ensure her family was cared for. Wilma and Roland Thompson were married for 54 years of marriage until her husband’s passing day on February 1, 2017.
Wilma passed away on Thursday, August 23 at Research Medical Center at the age of 74. Preceding her in death were her parents and eldest sister, Alice Smalls.
Wilma L. Thompson leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Roland S. Thompson, III; her grandchildren, Tiffanie Forte and Jasmine Thompson; one great-grandchild, Austin Brown; she also leaves to cherish her memory, four sisters and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral Service for Wilma Thompson will be held Saturday, September 1, 2:00 p.m. at the Lawrence A. Jones and Sons Funeral Chapel, 1800 E. Linwood Blvd. No Visitation.
Interment, Forest Hill Cemetery.
