LEE CALVIN SIMMS
Lee Clavin Simms 74, departed this life on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Village Hospice House in John Knox Village of Lee’s Summit, MO. Lee (Tip, as he was loving called by his family & friends) was born June 13, 1945 in Altheimer, Arkansas to Carliss Simms and Verlean Bohanon. He spent the earlier part of his childhood in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, being nurtured and loved by his Grandfather, Sammie Simms and Grandmother, Willie Mae [WU1] Simms, along with his Aunt, Carrie Simms and Uncle, James Simms. His nurturing and love continued when he relocated to Kansas City, MO to be raised by his Parents, Morris and Verlean Cunningham. Lee attended Annunciation Catholic School and graduated from Lillis High School in Kansas City, MO. He continued his higher education at Kansas State College of Pittsburg (Pittsburg State University) in Pittsburg, Kansas. While there, he became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, in which he recently celebrated 50 years of membership in a special pinning ceremony. He graduated from Kansas State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. While matriculating at Kansas State College, Lee met and married the love of his life, Joyce E. Avery in 1971 on his birthdate, June 13th to this 48-year union was born four children, two girls and two boys. Lee’s professional career included the positions of Loan Officer at Capital Federal Savings & Loan, as well as Blue Hills Home Association. He was a Real Estate Appraiser at Carl I. Brown & Co and the Jackson County Assessment Department, from which he retired in 2015. Lee was a proud Veteran of the United States Army, completing a tour of duty in the Vietnam War. He received an honorable discharge, having earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and two Overseas Bars. Although Lee was successful in his career choices, his greatest accomplishment was giving his life to Christ when he was baptized in Jesus name at The Life Church of Kansas City, MO, where he faithfully served as an usher. Lee is preceded in death by his Father, Carliss Simms; Mother, Verlean Cunningham; Stepfather, Morris Cunningham; Sister Sandra Cunningham-Jones, Brothers; Michael Cunningham and Carl Cunningham. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife, Joyce E. Simms; Sons: Lee Christopher Simms, Kansas City, MO; James Avery Simms, Orlando, Florida; Daughters: Leilani Annette (Caesar) Adams, Kansas City, MO; Rachael Joy (Juvaughn) Baker, St Louis, MO; Eight Grandchildren: Ronald Hearron Jr., Lee Andre Simms, Elijah Simms, Marcus Simms, Khalid Adams, Zaire Adams, Payton Adams, all of K.C., MO; Brooklynn Joy Baker, St. Louis, MO; Brother: Wesley (Joyce) Cunningham Elgin, Illinois; Sister, Helen Childs, Tulsa Ok.; Sister-in- Law, Ruby N. Royston ,K.C., MO; Brother- in- law, Eddie B. Avery Jr. K. C., MO; Aunt, Carrie Johnson; Uncle, James Simms; Special Close Cousins, Donald Ray( Cynthia) Johnson, Deborah Mothershed, Valerie Pruitt, all of Pine Bluff, Arkansas and a host of nephews, nieces and other relatives and loyal friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at The Life Church 2282, 10400 View High Drive KCMO 64134. Visitation 9:00 a.m. Interment Monday, October 7, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in Leavenworth National Cemetery.
