Katie Lee (Jones) Blockmon entered this world on October 4, 1930. She transitioned from this life to eternal life on May 15, 2019. Born in Tillar, Arkansas, and Katie was the youngest of seven children birthed by Israel and Katie (Baldin) Jones. Both parents, her four sisters (Elizabeth, Mae Frances, Lula and Edna) and two brothers (Jack and Jonny) preceded her in death.
The Jones family moved to Kansas City, Kansas in 1945. While walking to and from school, she met Hollis Blockmon, the young man to whom she would wed. They were married in 1947 and shared 68 years together. To this union, seven children were born. Hollis and one son, Kent Anthony Blockmon, also preceded her in death.
Katie was a woman of faith, and a woman of grace. God gifted her with discernment and the ability to live a quite and poised life. She shared her faith with her children and family. The home was frequently the gathering place for extended family, neighbors, and friends and especially on Sunday’s and holiday’s as Katie was an excellent cook. Her grandchildren often encouraged her to open a restaurant. They told her to name it “Katie’s Place.”
Katie’s church affiliations include Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor H.W. Bowen, Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor A.L. Baker and Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor O.L. Collins. Life beyond her home included a career as a lab technician at the Monark Egg Distribution Company. She retired after providing thirty years of faithful service.
She leaves to cherish her life, six children: Hazel (George) Byers, Loraine Allen, Hollis Jr., Dwayne, Tonoa (Ronald) Thomas, and Sidney (Elaunda). She also leaves a host of Grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, in-laws, nephews, nieces and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 24, 2019 at Faith City Christian Center 2500 South 44th Street KCKS. Visitation 9:00 am. Interment Highland Park Cemetery KCKS.
