Mrs. Joan Laverne Nunley, 87 of Kansas City, MO went home to glory on Sunday, February 3,2019 at St Joseph Medical Center surrounded by her family. She was born August 1, 1931 in Kansas City, MO, the only child of Elbert Tommy Acrey and Flora Mae Williams, who both preceded her in death.  She received her education in the Kansas City, MO school district, graduating high school from Lincoln/R T Coles.  She was married to Nolen Nunley in 1963 until his death in 1974.  They welcomed into their loving home through adoption, a son Anthony, and a daughter Traci.

Mrs. Nunley was a fun loving, no nonsense woman.  If you wanted to know the truth, ask Mrs. Nunley.  She would give you her advice, sometimes unsolicited, but it came from her heart and her life's experiences.  She often said, "I've been where you're trying to go." She was a strict parent, especially with her daughter, but, the most loving and affectionate mother to both her children.  The neighborhood teens on 57th and Michigan, where she raised her children, often sought out her witty wisdom.  She was a past member of St. Stephen Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. John W. Williams.  She was also a past member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Emanuel A. Johnson.  During the mid to late 70's, she worked at St. Therese Little Flower as a Montessori school teacher.  She went on to work in the food service industry at various cafeterias.  Her last employment before becoming ill was at Costco as a food demonstrator.  She loved meeting new people and striking up conversations with total strangers.  She was former member of the Order of Eastern Star of Missouri and was a former past Worthy Matron of Queen of Sheba chapter 19.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Anthony (Cassandra) Nunley of Kansas City, KS. Daughter, Traci Nunley of Kansas City, MO. Granddaughters, Carisa (Cedric) Tucker, of Kansas City, and Ciara May of Charlotte, North Carolina. Great-grandson, Daerion Davis of Kansas City, MO.
