Edna May Jackson Plowright, age 92, departed this life on Thursday, March 8, 2018, with her loving family by her side.
Edna was born November 17, 1925, in Banes Cuba, to Virginia Dixson and Robert Jackson. She was the fourth of seven children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kester Mortimer Plowright, siblings, Robert Jackson, Medford Jackson, Albertina Campbell, Vincent Jackson, and Owen Jackson.
At the young age of two years old she moved from Banes, Cuba to Montego Bay, Jamaica. Edna resided in Jamaica and attended private school until the tender age of nineteen years old, when she migrated to the United States and worked as a Domestic Worker in private homes. Shortly before her departure to the United States she joined Kester Mortimer Plowright in Holy Matrimony. Soon after her arrival to the United States, Edna sponsored her husband, Kester M. Plowright to join her in the United States. Within their union they conceived five children: Kathleen, Jacqueleen, James, Kester, Jr., and Vincent. Edna and Kester settled in Kansas City, Missouri, where four of their five children were born.
While residing in Kansas City, Missouri Edna also worked at St. Luke’s Hospital for some period of time. In 1966, Edna discontinued her career in the medical field and went on to own and operate The Play-Rite Daycare Center at 2707 Cleveland Avenue for over thirty years with Kester by her side. Their facility was the first of its’ kind. It didn’t just offer babysitting services but a structured learning environment for thousands of children that passed through the center. After over thirty years of service she retired. Edna was also a member of the Mayor’s Ethnic Enrichment Commission, where she represented Jamaica. While serving in her role she established and operated the Jamaican Booth at the Ethnic festival for over thirty years. Because of her love for her family, over the years Edna sponsored several of her family members to join her in the United States.
