James O. Bowland was born January 22, 1928 in Kansas City, Kansas to the late Noah Kirkwood and Nona Bell Sawyer. He received his education from the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools. James later joined the United States Army in 1946 where he received a honorable discharge in 1949. He then met the love of his life, Rebecca Taylor and wouldn’t be united in marriage for the next 70 years. Their union gifted them eleven children.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Noah Kirkwood, Nona Bell Sawyer, 3 children; Cheryl, Kathy, Robert and daughter-in-law Kelly Bowland.
His strong work ethic lasted more than 40 years. Beginning at Armor Packing House for 13 years and then for 30 years at the Lake City Ammunition Plant. James ended his working career at Metropolitan Baptist Church, of which he was a member for over 60 years.
James is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 70 years, Rebecca Bowland, three daughters; Joanne Moreland (Wilbert), Tracy Tyler, Leigh Byers (Andre), five son’s; James Kirkwood, Richard Kirkwood (Marie), Mark Bowland, Kevin Bowland (Helen), Phillip Bowland (Beth Ann), daughter in law; Ernestine Kirkwood and a father like figure to a longtime childhood friend, Alissa Henderson, 20 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, half-brother, Adell Kirkwood, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, church family and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Metropolitan Baptist Temple. Visitation 9:00 A.M. Interment Mount Moriah Cemetery.
