Alda Juanita (Preston) Thompson was born March 8, 1926, in East St. Louis, Illinois, the oldest of five children born to the union of Zadie Lee (Simpson) and Walter Preston. She departed this life April 17, 2019. She was preceded in death by her parents and her four siblings. She was known to most people as Juanita.
The family moved to Kansas City early in her life. She attended public schools in Kansas City, Kansas, and became the first in her family to graduate from high school.
Following high school graduation, Juanita pursued a career in nursing. She attended nursing schools in St. Louis and Chicago completing her training with a degree as a Registered Nurse.
Juanita spent most of her work life as a registered nurse in metropolitan Kansas City area hospitals. Her favorite clinical areas included nursery, mental health, and geriatrics. After more than 40 years in her chosen profession, she retired in 1993 to provide full time physical care for her mother Zadie until she passed in 2000.
Throughout her lifetime, Juanita was full of life, vigor, and vitality. She enjoyed cooking and sewing. She did some traveling……….but never on an airplane! That was not her style. Her friends will remember her as a woman with a feisty spirit, a quick and engaging smile, a sharp and sometimes acerbic wit, and a genuine love for people. She was always willing to help people out whenever she was able.
Juanita was not blessed to have any children of her own, but she doted on her 10 nieces and nephews. “Aunt Nita’’ as she was fondly remembered by those nieces and nephews, always helped them out and loved to celebrate their accomplishments. She was always concerned about their well-being and enjoyed seeing them.
She leaves eight nieces and nephews to cherish her memory. She also leaves an aggregate of grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as great grand nieces and great grand nephews who can remember being entertained by stories of their “Aunt Nita”. We will miss her, but we know God’s plan now is to enjoy her wit and personality on the heavenly stage. Rest Well Aunt Nita, Juanita, Mrs. Thompson.
