Obituary Windolyn Doris (Dot) Smith was the youngest child born to the union of Winston Watson and Georgia Lee Beene May 7, 1947, in Hope, Arkansas. Dot later moved to Kansas City, MO at the age of seven years old. She matriculated through the Kansas City Public Schools and graduated from Central High School in 1965. During her high school years, she actively participated in many school activities such as being VP of American Field Service and National Honor Society. Dot also was a member of the NAACP Youth Council, participating in protests and marches. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education at Kansas Wesleyan University. She furthered her education at UMKC with earning Masters and Educational Specialist degrees. She was a member of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Dot was employed at the Kansas City School District for 43 years. She excelled as a teacher, Instructional Coach and as a Reading Specialist. Making a positive impact on the children’s lives throughout her teaching career. Dot met and married her high school sweetheart, Frederick Smith, a decorated Vietnam Veteran November 29, 1969. To this union their beloved son, Derrick Omari was born. Fred and Dot enjoyed a life of traveling, playing golf, had a fascination with riverboats, entertained and enjoyed family fellowships. They also enjoyed weekly couples’ night outs. She truly adored their grandson, Markus, and great niece and nephew Simran and Inesh. Dot accepted Christ at an early age. She was an active member of Gilbert Memorial A.M.E. Church where she wore many hats, such as singing faithfully in the choir, a President of the Women’s Missionary Society, and participated in various committees until her health failed. Both parents, sister Sarah, and nephew Clarence Lynn, preceded her in death. Dot departed this earthly life on Sunday, March 5, 2023, at University of Kansas Medical Center. Her legacy lives on through her devoted husband, Frederick; son, Derrick Omari (Brandi); grandson, Markus Winston Smith; nephew, Scott Fulton (Mamta); great niece and nephew; Simran Fulton and Inesh Fulton; special brother-in-law Clarence Fulton; and a host of family and friends. Funeral services will be held March 11, 2023, 12:00pm at St. James UMC. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11am-12pm at the church. Service conducted by Lawrence A.
