Ms. Verestine Peters

Obituary Verestine Peters, 86, of Kansas City, MO, died June 17, 2021. She was born to the union of Luther and Ada Murphy on September 18, 1934, in Sherrill, Arkansas. She was the fifth of nine children. She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband John L. Peters, son Kenneth Peters, daughter Michele Armstrong, and four siblings. The family moved to Kansas City, Kansas in 1948 where she was educated in the Kansas City, Kansas school district. After her education, she met her soul mate and married John L. Peters. Their union had 6 children Terranie Murphy, Michele Armstrong, Ronna Kay Peters, Rickey Peters, Kathy Peters, and Kenneth Peters. Mrs. Peters accepted Jesus Christ as her savior at an early age. She loved the Lord and was a member of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. William F. Snorgrass and the late Rev. A. M. Hudson, Sr. She could be heard admonishing her family in the Lord with expressions like, “While you trying to figure it out, He already got it worked out. Trust in the Lord. He will never put more on you than you can bear. And He may not come when you want Him, but He is always on time.” Mrs. Peters had a true, unconditional love for her family. She always had a listening ear, a needed smile, and a shoulder to lean on. She was willing to help with the issues her family may have faced. And ultimately, she would point the family to Jesus for the answer to all of their dilemmas. She loved to cook and have family members over on Sundays and holidays to dine on her home-cooked, hearty meals. It gave her immense pleasure to see the family all together enjoying her cooking. Every now and then she would stand to the side and just observe their joyful interactions. She would watch her family exchanged stories and erupt with laughter. You could see tears rolling down the side of her face. When asked what was wrong, she would respond, “Nothing, these are tears of joy.” Mrs. Peters favorite pastime was traveling, listening to music, dancing, playing card games, and exercising. Walking was a big part of her pastime routine. Her son Kenneth was her walking partner. They would walk miles together. They could be seen walking in the neighborhood and Loose Park. Walking was her time of prayer and meditation. She walked as if she was kissing the earth with her feet. Mrs. Peters worked as a women’s fashion sales associate for Dillard’s. She retired after thirty-two years of service. This was not just a job for her, it was her lifelong passion. Even before being hired, she always had a love and flair for designer clothes. She was a fashionista before the word was in vogue. So, it was not a surprise for her to shine and be recognized throughout her career as an “Outstanding Sales Associates.” And she won the prestigious Dillard’s “Pacesetter Award.” Mrs. Peters mantra was, “Dress for Success.” She enjoyed helping many women dress for all occasions. Many of the women would return and thank her for the attire she helped select. They would share stories of how their attire made a terrific impression in both business and social settings. Their impeccable image in the corporate world led to greater opportunities and higher success. And when they were out on the town, they received lots of compliments on their good taste in clothing and invitations for dates from admirers. Mrs. Peters loved people. She was affectionate and caring in her intermingling with people. After she retired from Dillard’s, she worked as a caregiver for the elderly. Her love for seniors, patience, positive attitude, and sense of humor made her a perfect fit to help the elderly. Mrs. Peters would pray with them, read The Word with them, sing with them, laugh with them and cry with them. They would light up like a Christmas tree when they saw her. She brought so much joy to their lives. And they, too, brought so much joy and purpose to her life. Mrs Peters is survived by her children: Terranie Murphy, Ronna Kay Peters, Rickey Peters (Karen) and Kathy Peters; siblings: Ella Murphy, Rose Jackson (Dennis), Charles Murphy; grandchildren: Treniece Murphy, Marlon Peters, Marquita Peters, Sherice Stamps (Julian), LeVera Peters, Taneeka Howard (William), DeAndre Wren, Kenneth Peters II, Terranie Murphy Jr; Ten, great-grandchildren. And one great-great grandchild. Funeral service will be held Saturday, June 26, 2021,11:00am Lawrence A. Jones & Sons Funeral Chapel. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery.
