Tommie B Washington

Obituary Tommie Berniece Mayfield-Washington was born on November 26, 1921 in Beggs, Muscogee County, Oklahoma to the union of Houston and Bertha McNac-Mayfield. Mrs. Washington departed this life near the hour of midnight, at her home, tended to by her son Wayne, on May 20, 2020. Both parents preceded her in death as well as sisters: Annie (Mason), Beatrice “Dinah” (Grayson), Eula (Kidd), Carrie (Breshers) and brothers Adam “Jab”, Emmanuel “Tootha”, Johnny, Henry, Jessie, and Houston, Jr. Also preceding her in death was her husband of 69 years, Perry Washington, and one son, James. She professed hope in Christ at an early age at Manard Mountain Baptist Church in Muscogee County, Oklahoma. She attended elementary school on Manard Mountain and she graduated from Lincoln High School, Muscogee, Oklahoma, in 1939. On moving to Kansas City, Missouri in 1940 she affiliated with Morning Star Baptist Church and then with Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church and lastly with Swope Parkway Church of Christ. She was active in local politics in the 1940’s and 1950’s and served as Committee Woman for the third district. For most of her adult life Mrs. Washington enjoyed success as an antiques dealer. “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure. Buy from the latter and sell to the former.” Of her many passions gardening and fishing were at the top. Not far behind was enjoying supporting the athletic activities of her five sons at Southeast High School and not missing a University of Missouri football game of three of those sons. She herself enjoyed swimming and walking at a local community center into her mid-nineties. Mrs. Washington was an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation and a member of the National Association of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Washington will forever reside in the memories of her descendants. Her sons: Preston, Russell, Sr., Curtis, Sr. (Faye), Wayne, and David. Her grandchildren: Jason, Rosylin, Russell, Jr., Moria Wilson (Cedric) Jacquelyn Winston (George), Curtis, Jr., and Erious Fletcher. Fifteen great grandchildren, a special niece, Jerline “Polly” Ross (Arthur), and a host of nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers consider a donation to Amethyst Place. Graveside services on June 1, 2020, 10:00 a.m., National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas. Procession to depart 1800 E. Linwood, Kansas City, Missouri, at 8:45 a.m. Social distancing observed.
