Obituary Thomas Williams Hughes, Jr., 72, of Kansas City, Missouri died on Friday, May 28, 2021 at the home. He was born on April 4, 1949 in Drew, Mississippi to Thomas Williams and Sarah Justice Hughes. He was the eldest son of ten children. He was preceded in death by his, grandparents, Ollie and Maude Hughes, two brothers, Bruce Hughes and Willis Hughes, one grandson, Tony Jr., father-in-law, Robert Bates, Sr., mother-in-law, Dorothy Bates, two brothers-in-law, Robert Bates, Jr and Ronald Bates, one sister-in-law, Lynn Childress. Thomas was affectionately called June Bug by his family and friends. He was educated in the Kansas City Public Schools and was a graduate of Central High School Class of 1967. After high school he joined the Job Corps and learned the art of meat cutting. Thomas met and married Barbara Bates in January of 1970. God gave them 51 years of marriage and four wonderful children. He obeyed the gospel in his early twenties and united with the Church of Christ under the leadership Brother Duane Jones where he remained, until God called him home. He was truly a lover of God and man. June Bug was a hardworking man, he worked for his uncle Homer Powell at Chicken-In-A-Box after school and on weekends. He was known as the chicken man, because he could fry that chicken so good. He later managed a Bar-B-Q house for his uncle cooking barbecue. In the 70's he was employed at Montgomery Wards for thirty years working various capacities ending up as shipping and receiving manager. After Wards closed down he went to work for the Hickman Mills School District, until he retired. He also operated his own lawn service. Thomas yet had another profession preaching the word of God, he had a natural gift of talking to people. He never met a stranger and would talk to anyone from a stranger on the street to the President of the United States. He was always sharing the Word of God, he truly loved with his brothers and sisters in Christ. Thomas was the #1 negotiator, he was a lover of his family, a good father and wonderful husband and provider, a real gentleman. What you saw is what you got. If he couldn't do you any good he wouldn't do you any harm. He enjoyed cooking up a big meals on Sunday and many family and friends would stop by because they knew he was cooking. Everyone was welcome. He was very instrumental in getting several family members employment there. His favorite place to go was Walmart and he also enjoyed listening to the blues. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Barbara Hughes; his sons, Donald Hughes, Tony Hughes, Rodney Hughes (Lindsey) and one daughter, Danielle Hughes, all of Kansas City, MO; mother, Sarah Justice- Hughes , Kansas City, MO; five brothers, Troy Hughes (Rosemary), Michael Hughes, Donald Hughes, Ricky Hughes and Lester Hughes (Chrissy) all of Kansas City, MO; two sisters, Melvie Tobias (Arthur) of St. Louis, MO, Renita Crumpton (Terrace) of Aurora CO; 14 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services Saturday, June 5, at 12:00pm at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation 11:00am-12:00pm at the church Service conducted by Lawrence A.
