Thelma Lee Overton

Obituary Thelma Lee Overton, 97, passed away on April 25th, 2020, of natural causes at the Evergreen Community of Johnson County in Olathe, Kansas. She was born on October 25, 1922, in Kansas City, Kansas to Annie Lee Barry and Nathaniel Collins, Sr. Her mother, father, three brothers, Nathaniel Collins, Jr., Joseph Collins, and James Collins, Sr., and two sisters; Willa Mae Manning and Geraldine Whatley preceded her in death. Thelma attended the Kansas City schools and graduated from Sumner High School in Kansas City, Kansas Class of 1942. She was united in marriage with James Overton. To this children three children were born: Carol, James, Jr., and Ronald. James Overton, Sr., and Ronald preceded her in death. Her work life included seven years at General Motors, Kansas City, Kansas, Fairfax Plant; with a stint as a “Rosie the Riveter.” Over the years, she became the proprietor of three Hair & Beauty Salons. She mentored several hair stylists in the Kansas City area. Having accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior earlier in life, Thelma with her sister Geraldine joined the Memorial Missionary Baptist Church of Kansas City, Missouri under the leadership of Bishop Larry B. Aiken and Pastor Olivia C.Q. Aiken. They, along with the church family and their work for the community brought great joy to her life. Thelma went home to be with the Lord on April 25, 2020, with the current COVID-19 Pandemic. The family wishes are for friends and families to “stay safe” following the national and local guidelines. Thelma was lovingly interred with her husband, James Overton, Sr., during Graveside Services at Leavenworth National Cemetery held on Friday, May 8, 2020. She leaves loving, caring, and joyful memories with her son, James Overton, Jr., of Raytown, Missouri; daughter, Carol Harris of Overland Park, Kansas; four grandsons: Lionel “Chip” Harris, Jr., Marlon Overton, Saleem Overton, and Marty (Overton) Kupka; six granddaughters: Marlo Hollins, Nwani H. Thompson, Melyssa Overton, Sabryna Overton, Victoria Sipho, and Ro’nae Overton (Smalls); three great-grandsons: KiJuon Harris, Zion Harris, and Overton Harris; three great-granddaughters: Livya Rogers-Harris, Autumn Harris, and Zoey Miser; special cousin, Ms. Juanita Jackson of Kansas City, Kansas; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Thelma Lee Overton, a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great-aunt, cousin, and Friend.
