Mrs. Thelma Britton

Thelma Britton, passed away on June 17, 2026. Thelma Bernice Britton was born on October 27, 1931, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Leola Winn and Dempsey Jackson. Leola Winn later married Luther Lee Haney Sr., who adopted Thelma and made her a proud member of the Haney family and the eldest of the Haney’s’ four children. She was a loving and supportive Big Sister to her younger siblings, Alberta (Haney) Smith, Rosemary Haney, and Luther Lee Haney Jr., even stepping in to care for them after her mother’s untimely passing. After graduating from the Lincoln High School in 1949, Thelma married Launcie Lee Britton on November 8, 1950, and their marriage of 62 years was blessed with five children, Sharon Yvonne, Launcie Levelle, Darrick Glenn, Brian Keith, and Michelle Renee. Thelma’s primary focus was her beloved family, but she also worked outside the home for a number of years in numerous positions with the Kansas City Public School System, until the early 1990’s when she joined her husband in retirement. In retirement, Thelma and Launcie enjoyed traveling and exploring, including to Hawaii and Florida, the couple’s favorite spots. Thelma is survived by her daughter, Sharon Y. Britton, her son, Darrick G. Britton (wife Shelly), her son, Brian K. Britton (husband Larry Durant), her son, Marvin Clay (wife Karon), whom she loved and treated as her son, her sister, Alberta Smith, and her brother, Luther L. Haney Jr. (wife Pam ). Surviving nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren are too numerous to name individually, and all of them were beloved and brought her great pride and joy. Thelma’s parents, Leola and Luther, husband, Launcie Lee, son, Launcie Levelle, daughter, Michelle Renee, and sister, Rosemary preceded her in death. Losing two of her beloved children early in their lives took a significant toll on her and created a void that she could never fill. She would often express that “a mother should never have to bury her children”. In her final years, one of her most cherished moments was putting her great grandson on her lap and giving him a ride down the hall in her wheelchair. A small and perfect joy repeated with each visit. Small of physical stature and unassuming in manor and demeanor. Thelma was full of spirit and strong conviction. Her life served as a gentle yet powerful witness to her enduring love and strength, providing a lasting warmth that embraced a testament to love and resilience. Her love is the kind of warmth that fills a family for generations. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday June 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Francis Regis Parish 8941 James A. Reed Road KCMO 64138. Interment: Moun Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 10 – 11:00 a.m. at the Church. Arrangements entrusted to Lawrence A. Jones Funeral Homes & Cremation.
