Ms. Sylvia Maxine Morrison

Mrs. Sylvia Maxine McKinley Morrison, beloved great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2024, at the age of ninety-three. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering strength that touched the lives of all who knew her. Sylvia was born on October 10, 1930, in Dewmaine, Illinois, to Edward and Edmonia McKinley. She was the fourth of eight children. She was preceded in death by her husband Eloda George Morrison Jr, her parents, three brothers Wilbert, Kenneth, and Edward III, and two sisters, Wandella and Joyce. After graduating from Attucks High School in Carbondale, Illinois in 1948, she wanted to pursue her passion for nursing and moved to Kansas City to attend Kansas City General Hospital #2 School of Nursing. Ater graduation she began her nursing career at Wheatley- Provident Hospital in Kansas City. She then decided Kansas City would be her home. Sylvia was united in marriage to Eloda George Morrison Jr. on January 31, 1957, they were married until he passed away in February of 2014. Together they took part in raising their six children, William, Carmen, Marie, Eric, Lori, and Eloda III. She instilled in them the importance of God’s love, empathy, and selflessness. After the closing of Wheatley-Provident Hospital, she worked at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital. Sylvia retired in 1995, as she ended her career at Swope Ridge Geriatric Center, where she was head of Nursing. It did not stop her from continuing to be the head nurse of our family and the neighborhood. Sylvia enjoyed staying in touch with her lifelong friends from nursing school where they traveled across the U.S from Yellowstone National Park to Myrtle Beach. She joined the “Sophisticated Ladies” with her close friends from the neighborhood. Sylvia loved spending time with her grandkids and great- grandchildren as they brought joy and laughter to her spirit. Sylvia rededicated her life to Christ and became a member Shalom Missionary Baptist Church. She had an unwavering commitment to her faith. She became an Usher, then the secretary of the Usher board. She loved Sunday school, gospel music and hearing a word from God. That is what she loved best. When her son Bishop Eric Morrison, became the senior pastor of Sunrise Baptist Church, now Kingdom Word Ministries, she moved her membership and became one of the Mothers of the church, where she continued ushering, studying God’s word, and giving God 100% of praise. Even though only very few knew her proper first name was Sylvia (including close family members), she was known as Maxine, Mackie, Granny, Granny-pooh, Linda, Little Lady, Other- momma, Sweetie and “Sexy.” Sylvia leaves behind two sisters, Betty Johnson and Norma Brown of Racine, Wisconsin. Her six children, William (Karen) Morrison, Carmen Morrison, Marie (Michael) Cook, Eric (Regina) Morrison, Lori (Darryl) Forte and Eloda III (Dawn) Morrison, ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close family friends and her church family. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 6, at 11:00am at Christian Charity Church. Interment Mount Moriah Cemetery. Visitation 9:00am -11:00am at the church.
