Deacon Robert Calvin McKinney

Deacon Robert Calvin McKinney, 88, was born October 29, 1935, to James and Francis McKinney in Wynne, Arkansas. He was the youngest born to this union. He lost his mother at a young age and moved to Kansas City where he was raised by his adoptive parents Flora and Thomas Hurst. His parents, adoptive parents, nine siblings, Christeen Walker; Everleen Marchbanks; James E. McKinney; Jeff McCoy; Willie L. McCoy; Autress McCoy, Sr.; Josephine Bailey; Vernice McKinney; and Hazel Wright.all preceded him in death. Robert received his secondary education from the Kansas City Missouri School District. He graduated from Manual High School in 1955 where he was active in ROTC and sports. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served in the 82 nd Airborne at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He received his honorable discharge in 1958. Once returning home to Kansas City, in April 1960, he met the love of his life, Angie Carter. Four months later, they were united in holy matrimony August 13, 1960, by the late Rev. Preston Allen, Jr. To this loving union, Karen Lynne and Kevin Lamont were born. Robert was an excellent provider for his family and retired from The United States Postal Service after 32 years. In 1964, he accepted Christ and was baptized at Macedonia Baptist Church by the late Rev. Preston Allen, Sr. He unified his membership with his wife, Angie who was a member of Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. He was a faithful member of Metropolitan for 60 years serving in multiple capacities: Young Adult Choir, Sunday School Teacher, Christian Worker, Deacon Ministry and Finance Committee. In 1979 he was ordained as a Deacon and on July16 , 2023, he was honored and made Deacon Emeritus. Robert loved to travel and cherished the times he spent with his family and friends. He enjoyed photography and took many pictures so that he could save the memories. One of his hobbies was trying new recipes and sharing them with family. He would often prepare special dished to show his love. Robert departed this earthly life for his heavenly home on Tuesday February 27, 2024. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 63 years, Angie, two children, Karen Lynne May (Merele), Phoenix, AZ; and Kevin Lamont McKinney (Sandra), Lee’s Summit, MO; five grandchildren, Camille May, Phoenix, AZ; Emily May, Dallas, TX; Maxwell McKinney (Jazmine), Benton, AR; Brennan McKinney, Lee’s Summit, MO; Jordan McKinney, Lee’s Summit, MO; goddaughter, Ina Harvey Mobley (Arthur), Lee’s Summit, MO; five sisters in-law, Victoria McCoy, KCKS; Mozell Jacob; and Myra Joe, Lee’s Summit, MO; Hattie Carter, KCMO; Rosie Carter, Long Beach, CA; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services Saturday, March 9, 2024, 12:00pm at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. Interment Mount Moriah Cemetery. Visitation 11:00am-12:00pm at the church.
