Obituary Celebrating a Life of Love and Service Randall E. “Randy” Hundley December 14, 1963 - April 9, 2023 It is with great sorrow that our family announces the passing of beloved son, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, cousin, friend, and public servant Randall E. “Randy” Hundley on Sunday, April 9, 2023 at his home at 59 years of age. He was born on December 14, 1963 in Kansas City, Missouri to H.M. “Peaches” (Crowfield) Settles and John D. Hundley, Sr. He graduated from Northeast High School in 1982 where he played basketball and was Team Captain and MVP. Randy received a basketball scholarship to attend Park College and worked multiple jobs while playing and again being named MVP and Team Captain. Randy began his family with Ava Marie Brooks in 1982 with the birth of their daughter Monica Hundley followed by their son John E. Hundley in 1985. In 1987, he completed his BA in Business Administration with a concentration in management and marketing. He earned more than 40 certifications and advanced credentials including an Executive MBA in Leadership from Benedictine College in 2012. Randy was appointed to the Kansas City Missouri Police Department (KCPD) on June 14, 1987. His assignments included Central Patrol Division, North Patrol Division, East Patrol Division, Special Projects Program, Metro Patrol Division, Homicide Unit, Traffic Investigation Unit, Computer Services, Information Services Division, Violent Crimes Division, Investigations Bureau, and the Administration Bureau where he was assigned at the time of his retirement on December 31, 2016 after 29 years of service. He continuously developed officers, supervisors, and commanders both locally and nationally and provided mentoring and assessment center training. His leadership was recognized with numerous awards, letters of commendation, and an appointment to the 16th Judicial Circuit of Missouri Juvenile Detention Alternatives Executive Steering Committee where he was Co-Chair. After retiring from KCPD, Randy served as Public Safety Manager for the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority and Public Safety Director for the Housing Authority of Kansas City. Randy was strong-willed and known for his moral character, deep love for God, and commitment to his community. He held volunteer leadership positions with more than 10 organizations including Board President for Twelfth Street Heritage since 2017 and 10 years with Healing Pathway Victim Service Agency. He continuously learned from children and young adults as a mentor and youth sports coach. For 30 years he served faithfully in different roles at St. Mark Union Church. He was the current Treasurer at Ivanhoe United Church of Christ and a member of the Missouri Mid-South Conference of the United Church of Christ's Council, representing 160 UCC congregations. He was also a member of the Western Association of the Missouri Mid-South Conference UCC Committee on Ministry. Randy had a huge heart, incredible compassion for others, and the most inviting smile and laugh. He could hold a conversation with anyone about anything and he made people feel special. He lit up every room he entered and was usually the loudest in the room and always the life of the party. He was known for his quick wit and sense of humor and most conversations included one of his catchphrases: “Really!”, “You know what?”, “Woah!”, and his classic closing, “Be good.” Randy loved music, an interest nurtured by his mother when he was young. Music was his refuge in times of stress and his expression in times of joy. Every day he sung his favorite tunes spanning different genres and decades. He prioritized time with his family and friends and generously helped when needed and often without being asked. He enjoyed a good game of dominoes, family get togethers, and watching his beloved Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Lakers. Although divorced, Randy believed wholeheartedly in marriage and was excited about recently finding love with his “Honey.” Of all his roles, father and grandfather were Randy’s MOST treasured. He worked hard to position his children and grandson for success and loved them unconditionally. He was active in their lives and took tremendous pride in being a dad and Big Daddy. Randy was preceded in death by his grandparents Isaac and Elizabeth Hundley and John "Big Daddy" Crowfield and Bernice "Big Mommy" Crowfield; sister Shirlene Rochelle Day; aunts Ernestine Hundley Whittington, Rosie Lee Hundley Morris, Martha Lee Zewalk, Alice "Puddin" Thomason, and Shirley Ball; uncles Edgar Lee Hundley, Curtis Hundley, and William C. Hundley; and nephews Dawon L. Stockdale, Jr. and Franklin D. Childress III. Randy is survived by daughter Monica (Hundley) Coy and husband Alvis; son John E. Hundley; mother H.M. “Peaches” (Crowfield) Settles; father John D. Hundley, Sr. (Millie); grandson Matthew Coy; sisters Sharon Hundley, Helen Settles, Karla Settles, Coralyn Hundley Finney, and Mandisa Hundley; brothers Robert Hundley, Richard Kelly, John Hundley, Jr., and Bryan Hundley (Andrea); aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Randy‘s life Services will be held Saturday, April 22, 2023,11:00 am at Macedonia Baptist Church. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery.
