Mr. Phillip A. Scruggs

Philip Andrew Scruggs, age 70, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, in Kansas City, MO. Philip Andrew Scruggs was born the fourth of seven children September 30, 1953, to the late Rev. Wiley and Lillie M. Scruggs, in Atchison, Kansas. Growing up, he was a member of Second Christian Church. He attended public schools in Atchison and graduated from Atchison High School in 1971. Following graduation, he attended the University of Kansas for two years studying aeronautical engineering. In 1973, he enlisted in the U.S. Airforce and served for six years. During that tenure, he traveled extensively across the U.S. and was stationed at several different bases, including Alaska. He obtained the rank of Sargent and received numerous awards and decorations during his service. As an Electronic Computer Systems Specialist, his natural ability and understanding of technology allowed him to assist the military increase their computer capabilities and capacity. Upon his return to Kansas City, Philip worked for tech companies and retired from Toshiba in 2017. Philip enjoyed a variety of hobbies and activities including fishing, camping, rafting, and air shows. From a very early age, he researched and studied WWII aircraft extensively. He was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, Royals, Godzilla and Star Trek movies. Philip also participated in competitive BBQ cookoffs around the Kansas City metro area. He enjoyed his family and was always supportive of his siblings and nieces and nephews. On February 14, 2004, at Southside Christian Church, Philip married the love of his life, Vanessa McDaniels. In recent years, with the help of virtual technology, Philip became a member of The Good Shepherd Christian Church, Houston, TX. Philip was preceded in death by his parents, a nephew, Adam D. Anderson, and brother in-law, Bill L. Roper. His survivors include his wife, Vanessa, and siblings Janie M. (Ray) Jones, Topeka, KS, Dorothy A. Roper, KCMO, Wiley Scruggs, KCMO, Alice J. (David)Anderson, KCMO, Marilyn S. (Norman) Fiddmont, Houston, TX, and Donald L. (Laura Renee) Scruggs, Charlotte, N.C., as well as generations of nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2024, 2pm at Southside Christian Church, 7304 Cleveland Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64130. Services conducted by Lawrence A. Jones & Sons Funeral Chapel. Condolences may be shared on our website.
