OMAR ALBERT HAZLEY

Obituary Omar Albert Hazley, 71, passed away on October 17th, 2020, surrounded by his family. He was the sixth of ten children born to Charles and Nellie Mae (Gaines) Hazley on January 7th, 1949, in Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from Central High School in Kansas City, Missouri in 1967. His activities included football, basketball, Honor Society, C Club (athletic pep club), and Declaratives (student service organization). At a towering 6’7”, he was best known as a basketball player. During his junior year at Central, the team won the state basketball championship. The Eagles nearly repeated the following year, with the only loss of the season coming in the state championship game, which went into overtime and resulted in Central coming up just short of victory. After high school he continued his basketball career at the University of Iowa, where he played on one of the most prolific teams in school history. They remain the only team in school history to finish Big Ten conference play with a perfect 14-0 record. The team averaged 103 points per game, prior to the advent of the 3-point line. In 1971, he graduated a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. He continued his studies at the University of Central Missouri, where he earned a Master of Business Administration. Omar married his college sweetheart, Diane (Cameron) on December 23rd, 1972. They were faithfully married for 43 years. Their union bore one child, Angela Rochelle Hazley Nixon. They settled in Kansas City, where Omar worked for a Mobil Oil as a call center supervisor for 30 years until his retirement in 2001. Even after his playing days came to an end, Omar remained an avid sports fan. He also enjoyed cooking and grilling, staying active with activities like cycling, and working in the yard. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and close friends. Omar was preceded in death by his wife, Diane (Cameron) Hazley; parents, Charles Hazley, Sr. and Nellie Mae (Gaines) Hazley; brother Charles Hazley, Jr. and his wife Gloria Dean (Holmes) Hazley; and brothers-in-law Wayman Snead, Willie Collier, Marvin Lee. Omar is survived by his daughter, Angela Nixon; grandchildren, Darren Nixon, Jr. and Josslyn Nixon; siblings, Gloria Snead, Edith (Chester) Stovall, Bonnie Hazley, Sarah Collier, Richard (Donna) Hazley, Deloris Hazley, Betty Lee, and Ronald (Vicki) Hazley; and host of nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at Watkins Heritage Chapel, 4000 Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64130.
