Mary Alice Flucas

Obituary Mary Alice Flucas was born on Wednesday, October 30, 1946, in Shreveport, Louisiana to the union of Albert and Esslean Flucas. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Albert Flucas and Esslean (Crawford) Flucas, and maternal grandparents, Isaac and Lucinda Crawford. Mary’s family moved to Kansas City, Missouri in the early 1950’s. Not long after arriving, the family joined Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Mary accepted Christ at an early age. Growing up in the church prepared her for life’s journey that presented many twists and turns, yet she persevered. Mary was a member of Park Avenue Baptist Church from for more than thirty years before joining Palestine Missionary Baptist Church on January 1, 2011, where she remained a member until her passing. Mary received her elementary and high school education in the Kansas City, Missouri School District. As a young woman, Mary sought continued education opportunities and was excited to participate in the Model Cities jobs training program in the mid 1960’s. This program prepared Mary to work for the Jackson County Detention Center where she worked for more than ten years. She also worked as a Teacher Assistant for Attucks Elementary School and J.S. Chick African-Centered School. Her interest in education later led her to work in the field of Early Childhood Education with Pre-K level children where she could influence young children’s love for learning during their formative years of life. She served as Pre-School teacher at Glad Tidings Christian Academy for eight years and Palestine Learning Center for five years. Mary enjoyed watching and analyzing the politics of the day (one can only imagine her thoughts in today’s political climate!). She enjoyed reading the Bible and having lengthy discussions about the spiritual insights she discovered. She loved the Lord and always trusted that He would provide for all of her needs. Watching movies and socializing with family and friends was something that filled her days. Mary was a very strong-willed and opinionated person, so whenever she felt a debate was far from her thinking she would quickly remind you to “Hold that thought…! or, tell you to “Sit back and listen...” We shall “treasure the best of her life” in our hearts forever. Mary Alice Flucas leaves to treasure her memory, a daughter, Carolyn Renee Flucas; a son, Ronald Flucas (Angela; granddaughter, Patricia LaSonya Marie Flucas; brothers, William (Jim) Grigsby (Lynda) and MacArthur Grigsby; great-granddaughter, Ayanna Banks of Kansas City; grandchildren: Kwame Flucas, Robert McGruder, Amisha Mason of El Paso, Texas, and Shawndrika Flucas of San Antonio, Texas; special lifelong friends, Stella Mincey and Ruth Ramsey of Kansas City; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Funeral Service for Mary Alice Flucas will be held Friday, February 2, 11:00 a.m. at Palestine Missionary Baptist Church, 3619 E. 35th St. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Church.
