Mr. Mark Anthony Hayes

Born on Wednesday, September 24, 1958, to Spulghon Thomas Hayes Jr. and Dolly Green Hayes, Mark entered the world as the firstborn of a loving union. Just one year later, he welcomed his sister Sherri into the family, embracing his role as a protective big brother. Over time, Mark’s heart expanded to include siblings Jeffrey Brown, Charles Thomas Hayes, and Brittany Rose Hayes, each of whom benefited from his quiet strength. Mark passed away peacefully in his home on August 25, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and dedication. Mark’s early years were spent in Kansas City, where he attended Linwood Elementary School, Manual Junior High, and graduated from Paseo High School in 1976. A natural athlete, he excelled in sports and played freshman football with enthusiasm and skill. His spiritual foundation was laid early at Christ Temple Pentecostal Church, where he began his journey of faith. Mark was a father to Tamika Rose Boyd, Anthony “Tony” Hicks, and Mark Anthony Hayes, Jr. While he was not always present in their lives, his role as their father remains a meaningful part of his legacy. Mark was extremely neat in his appearance, and his home was always immaculate. Everything had a place. A hardworking man, Mark inherited the entrepreneurial spirit and work ethic of the Hayes family. In October 1997, he began his career with the City of Kansas City, first serving with the Housing Authority and later with Sanitation Services. Mark found joy not only in the work itself but in the camaraderie, he shared with his coworkers. Known for his integrity, reliability, and dedication, Mark retired in October 2023, after 26 years of faithful service. Mark’s interests were simple and heartfelt—he loved sports, Kansas City Chiefs and Royal, music, and he loved his Westerns. Though he faced a dark period in his life, Mark showed remarkable resilience and strength, doing what was necessary to find his way back to light. A quiet and reserved soul, he was deeply devoted to his family and cherished the moments spent with them. Mark would want us to remember the happy time we spent as family; the love and laughter at family gatherings and special occasions that we will long remember. Mark is preceded in death by his beloved son Anthony “Tony” Hicks, his mother Dolly Brown, his sister Sherri Renee Hayes-Biggs, and all of his loving grandparents. Mark leaves behind a loving family who will miss him dearly: his father, Spulghon Thomas Hayes; his brothers Jeffery Brown (Connie), Charles Thomas Hayes, and sister Brittany Rose Hayes; his children, Tamika Rose Boyd, and Mark Anthony Hayes, Jr.; his grandchildren, Mark Anthony Hayes III, Nilan Hayes, Cianna Lewis, An’Tinque T. Hicks, and great-grand daughter Aa’Ryn; as well as many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, and other extended family and numerous friends.
