Mrs. Maquita Guinn-Wells

Maquita R. “Micki” Guinn-Wells was born on May 3, 1972, and lived a life defined by love, service, and an unwavering commitment to family and community. From her earliest days, Micki’s heart for people—especially children and elders—was evident, and she carried that gift with her throughout her life. Micki was born and raised in Wyandotte County, Kansas City, Kansas. She grew up surrounded by family and love, spending much of her childhood at her grandparents’ home on North 22nd Street and her family home on North 38th Street. These roots shaped her deep sense of community and belonging that would later define her life’s work. She attended schools in USD 500, including Quindaro and Claude Huyck Elementary Schools, Eisenhower Middle School, and F.L. Schlagle High School. Micki continued her education at Kansas City Kansas Community College, where she also earned her CNA certification—another reflection of her desire to care for others. Micki devoted the latter part of her professional career to Douglas Elementary School, where she served as a Family and Community Engagement Services Specialist. She poured her heart into nurturing students and supporting families, creating coat and food drives, organizing father-daughter and mother-son dances, coordinating walking school buses, preparing Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, arranging snacks for students to take home, conducting home visits, and hosting breakfasts with grandparents. Before this she served as a case manager for many nonprofit agencies and behavioral health organizations such as the Kaw Valley Center, Scott Greening Center, and Community LINC. Her work went far beyond a job—it was her calling. Micki was a lifelong servant to her community, with a special passion for youth and the elderly. A woman of deep faith, Micki was a lifelong member of Salem Baptist Church, where she was baptized at an early age by Rev. C. B. Bailey. Over the years, she faithfully served in many capacities, including Sunbeams, Red Circle Girls, President of the Youth Choir, and member of the Mass Choir. Her love for music extended beyond Salem, as she also sang with Schlagle’s Gospel Choir, the Wyandotte Gospel Choir, and the SCLC Choir. Through song and service, Micki lifted spirits wherever she went. Micki was married for 21 years to her beloved husband, Clayton L. Wells. Their bond was one of love, partnership, and joy—often shared on the dance floor two-stepping or singing karaoke together. She was the proud mother of her son, Richard Anthony Wells, and Caitlyn Marie Wells. Through marriage and love, she also embraced Carol Ann Robertson, Crystal Nicole Barrientos and William Scott Robertson as her own. Micki’s heart knew no limits—she adopted many children in the community, most notably Sara Elizabeth Jarvis, loving them as family. She was a devoted grandmother to Alicia, Jason, Stevi, Carina, Ray’Lee, Antonia, Alessio, great grandmother to Niya, Layla, Atlas, Amir, Arabella and many others who affectionately knew her as a constant source of love, encouragement, and support. Micki found joy in life’s simple and meaningful pleasures—supporting her children, nieces, nephews, cousins, and community members at their games and events; cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs; fishing with friends; cooking her specialty meals; and playing cards and board games with loved ones. She loved seafood, the color blue, the music of Anita Baker, Luther Vandross, and Gerald LeVert, watching The Nanny, and late-night Walmart trips back when the store was open 24 hours. Her proudest accomplishments were her marriage and family, the countless students she helped shape, the businesses she helped start, her gift for networking, and her work connected to The Hickory Log. Yet above all, Micki’s greatest legacy is her love for people. She never met a stranger, opened her home to family, friends, and those in need, and was never too busy for a baby or an elder. She thrived in social settings and was a genuine, loyal friend to all. Micki was preceded in death by her parents, Johnella Edgerson Guinn and Edward Guinn Sr., and her beloved brother, Kahlil Guinn. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Clayton L. Wells; her children and grandchildren; her sister, Tiffany Guinn Addison; her brother, Eddie Guinn Jr.; her aunts Evelyn Wayne, Phyllis Guinn Howard, and Laura Austin; her uncle John Edgerson Jr.; and a host of extended family, friends, church family, and community members whose lives were forever changed by her love. Micki’s life was a living testimony of compassion, faith, and service. Her legacy will continue to live on through every life she touched.
