Mrs. Mae Smith

Mae Elizabeth Hawkins was born March 19, 1927, in Moffet, Oklahoma to James and Frances (Gordon) Hawkins. She was called to her Heavenly Home with Christ our Lord and Savior on October 31, 2025. She was proceeded in death by her brother, James Hawkins, Jr.; husband, James Smith; both parents; grandson, Keith Smith; granddaughter, La’Keshia Smith; sons, Samuel and Clifford Smith; granddaughter, Tyra McCoy; great grandson, Carlos Wade; and great-great grandson, Amir Terry. She moved to Kansas City, MO in the 1940s, where she met and married James Smith. To this union, eight children were born. While Mae worked at Rival Manufacturing, she spent most of her time as a dedicated housewife, mother and grandmother. Mae accepted Christ in her life at the age of 27 and was one of the original devout members of Grace Baptist Church. She loved listening to gospel hymns, reading and studying the bible, spending time in devotion, and sharing the word. She specifically took great pleasure in listening to the Kansas City Christian Broadcast Network (KCCV) 760 AM. She enjoyed roller skating, playing softball and checkers, knitting, bowling, watching westerns and classical movies, cooking, and spending time with her family. As a grandmother to three generations of grandchildren who affectionately called her “Momma” and “Big Momma,” Mae was a true matriarch and family treasure loved and adored by many. She lived to see all of her great-great grandchildren and spent lots of time with her youngest great-great grandsons, Mekhi Lowery and Ja’Siah Murphy. Mae leaves to cherish her precious memories, children Wanda Bowman, James Smith, Betty Ross, Debra Smith, Ruth Smith, John (Jennifer) Smith, and daughter in Christ, Valerie Mitchell; niece, Enjoyce Jackson, and her children and grandchildren (Fort Smith, Arkansas); and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday November 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church of Greater Kansas City 8524 Blue Ridge Blvd. KCMO 64138. Interment: Twelve Gates Memorial Gardens.
