Obituary LUTHER MAURICE LONG “Reece Cup” Luther Maurice (Reece Cup) Long was the first born to the union of the late Martin Luther Long Jr. and Annie Lowery Long in Gastonia, North Carolina, born on July 5, 1960 (three weeks before his 59th birthday). With the loss of his father, his mother, a young widow made the decision to move her family to Kansas City, Missouri. Maurice attended several elementary schools in the Kansas City area, W.W. Yates, Bancroft and Wendell Phillips. He attended Westport High School and Paseo High School in the Class of 1978. Maurice was in the dry-cleaning business for several years. He started when he was 16 years of age at Woolf Brothers Department Store downtown. He worked at several dry cleaners in the Kansas City area as a presser. He worked an after-school job at Italian Gardens Restaurant as a busboy to give his brother and sisters their allowance. He was encouraged by his Aunt Carrie to relocate to California where he enrolled in a Dry Cleaning and Spot Remover class at Laney College to achieve a Certified Certificate. After his return from California, Maurice started a new career in his life. He started in the construction business. He completed the necessary classes and training for a construction worker. He was a member of the Local 1264, where he remained employed until his health declined. He married Patricia Griffin and from this marriage was one daughter, KiKia Long and the marriage was later dissolved. He professed his Faith in Christ at a young age and was a member of Sheffield Community Life Center Church. Maurice was preceded in death by his father, Martin Luther Long, Jr.; maternal grandparents, Marie and Robert Lowery; paternal grandparents, Mattie and Martin, Luther Long, Sr. and other aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces. Maurice leaves to cherish his memories, his mother, Annie Long (she always looked forward to his Giant Mother’s Day Cards); daughter, KiKia Long; brother, Ronnie Long (as they were as close as any brothers could ever be); sisters, Angela Long and Lurata Long (he was always her Big Brother); Aunts, Helena Long Brown and Carol Long Goodall; several ladies took him in during his time of illness and they were like aunts across the country. He will be laid to rest next to his Aunt Bernice (a second mother); and survived by two granddaughters. Funeral Services were held at Watkins Heritage Chapel on Friday, June21, 2019.
