Luthenia M. Coats

Obituary Luthenia Mae Coats, 67, passed away during the early morning hours on Sunday, April 15, 2018. Luthenia was born January 4, 1951, in Kansas City, Missouri to the late Theria Luther Brown and Mildred Edwards. She was preceded in death also by her sister, Audrey Newton, her brothers, Earl Reece and Wilbur Edwards and her niece, Tish Blunt. Luthenia grew up in Kansas City, Missouri and graduated from Manual High School in 1968. Shortly after high school, she met and married the man of her dreams, Oliver “O.C.” Coats. They were happily married ten years until his death in 1984. During this same time, Luthenia began working for Hallmark Cards, from which she retired after being a hardworking employee for over thirty-five years in 2004. Luthenia accepted Christ at an early age and attended Spruce St. Matthews Church under the leadership of Pastor George H. Barnes until her health began to fail, where she enjoyed Sunday school and volunteered on various committees and boards. In her spare time, you could catch her gardening, spending time with family, watching soap operas, and buying stuff on QVC. Luthenia Mae Coates leaves to cherish her memories, her only son, Delwayne (Shikita) Edwards of Blue Springs, Missouri; her brother, Michael (Sherri) Edwards of Kansas City, Missouri; a sister, Sandra Jackson of Columbus, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Michelle Carouthers of Kansas City; six grandchildren: Delica Edwards, Unique Edwards-President, Bianca Edwards-President, Delena Edwards, Delwayne Edwards, J. and Keidel Edwards; two great-grandchildren, Rani’Yah Woods and A’zariah Vaughn; her lifelong friends: Shirley and Oscar Garlington, James Deke, Sharon Cunningham, Hazel Harvey Young and Art Long; her nieces and nephews; a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral Service for Mrs. Luthenia M. Coats will be held Friday, April 27, 11:00 a.m. at Spruce St. Matthews Baptist Church, 2208 E. 55th Street.
